Chapter 1
Hamza Green was the youngest of three sons. His oldest brother was a soldier and had died fighting in a battle in the way of Allah. His second brother had just disappeared one day. He left one day and never returned. His parents had lost two sons and didn't want to lose a third. His father wanted him to stay at home and become a lawyer, but he longed for great adventures and distant lands - he wanted to be a seaman!
Hamza, if you travel in the sea, your life will be a misery,
said Hamza’s father, and you will regret it!
But sixteen-year-old Hamza Green was not touched by his father's words or the old man's tears. The only thing he wanted at present was to travel by sea to make his fortune. He didn't want to go to law school, as his father had hoped. He did not want to be part of his family's successful business as his mother had hoped.
Just one trip,
argued Hamza, and if I don't like it I'll come back and stay here with the family in Spain.
All three prayed Salat-e-Isthikhara (prayer for guidance). Hamza’s parents got the feeling that Hamza should avoid traveling in the sea. So, Mr. and Mrs. Green refused to give their consent. A sailor's life was dangerous. Storms occurred regularly at sea. Their winds have often thrown ships off course and, worse, smashed them against rocks or sandbanks. Many lives were lost that way. Then there was also the danger of pirates ambushing merchant ships, stealing their cargo, and killing their crew. No, Mr. and Mrs. Green decided, they could not consent and participate in the death of their son.
But Hamza refused to listen to his parents and thus brought upon himself the evil effects of the major sin of disobeying parents.
I know it's dangerous, father,
Hamza said. But I feel that it is my destiny. I am sorry.
I've made up my mind, mother,
Hamza said. All I've ever wanted is to be a seaman. I wish you and father would just give me your permission to go to sea.
I'm eighteen now,
Hamza continued. If you force me to become a lawyer or learn another profession, I will run away. But if you just let me go on one trip, I'll come back and do exactly what Father asks.
Later in his life, Hamza realized the Islamic teaching of being kind to parents. Children should behave kindly with parents, as Allah says in the Quran (the approximate meaning of the translation of the Quranic verse):
And we have enjoined man to be dutiful and kind to his parents.
[al-Ahqaaf 46:15]
Shaykh al-Sa’di (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Be dutiful and kind to parents
means: treat them kindly in every way, in word and deed.
One of the most important religious acts the child should do toward his parents is to obey them, do what they ask, and abstain from what they tell him. So when his father tells him to do something, he should rush to do what he is told, and when he tells him not to do something, he should hurry to give it up as long as there is no disobedience to Allah and His Messenger, for there is no obedience to a created being if it involves disobeying the Creator.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The two feet of Adam's descendants will not move on the Day of Resurrection when they stand before Allah until they are asked about five things. Your age and how you spent it, your youth and how you used it, your wealth - where it came from and what it was
