Kiss Or Kill - Jenny Vaughn

    Chapter One

She should have known that it was a bad idea to come out here with him. There were multiple warning signs in the weeks leading up to their trip. Lost luggage, which had somehow found its way up to her attic; plane delays and a near-cancellation; and the destruction of her favorite pair of skis—which she’d had since her freshman year of college—by the hands (or, rather, teeth) of her boyfriend’s dog.

Then there was the fact that Jada and Max had fought just three days before the trip and were not really on speaking terms when their flight finally took off. But the tickets were nonrefundable and after waiting nearly two extra days at the airport, she was not about to let this trip go to waste. And neither was he, apparently.

Thankfully, when they got to the hotel, there was a screw-up and they were apparently saddled with two Queen-sized beds instead of a single King. Jada was just fine with that and made herself comfortable on the bed closest to the door, spreading out her arms and legs as if to signify that Max would not be welcome to share with her.

    He didn’t try.

That should have been the most obvious sign that things were about to take a sharp turn but Jada stayed ignorant. They’d fought like this before. Even worse, actually. In the course of their three-year relationship, they’d had multiple fights that had lasted months until one of them cracked and apologized. They were both too stubborn for their own good, but perhaps that was why they worked so well together.

    Until now, at least.

Now, things were...different. So, so different.

On the plane, Jada had inched as far away from Max as possible, sitting with her face practically pressed against the window, feeling as if simply touching him would make her...something. She didn’t really know what something. But it wasn’t good. It wasn’t what she wanted. It wasn’t who she was and that was all the more reason to avoid his touch.

Max didn’t seem to mind and actually mirrored her move, practically sitting halfway in the aisle the entire way to Carson City. Jada should have known then that this trip was not going to end the same as it began. She should have known that nothing positive could come from this.

But she didn’t think about it at all as they touched down on the ground. She didn’t think about it as she got
