    Chapter One: No Time, No Money

    Even with every room filled with furniture and decorations, Saralynn’s new condo still seemed empty. True, the floor was still littered with packed boxes, meaning that every room was filled with superficial items that revealed no identity. Still, Saralynn felt that the silence was deafening.

    She half-heartedly walked over to the only box sitting on the counter in the kitchen, determined to at least unpack the box that would encourage her to cook dinner at home. She lifted the right flap, revealing several loose cooking utensils and the power base of her NutriBullet.

    While she was deciding where to store her cumbersome countertop appliance, her phone began buzzing in her back pocket. She reached for her phone and spun it around quickly, revealing the glass front with caller ID. Hank, she thought to herself as she debated rejecting the call. He had been keen on her for the last few weeks, and she had no idea why. At the last minute, Saralynn decided to take the call.

    Hey Hank, how’s it going? she asked as neutrally as possible. It’s not that Hank wasn’t attractive, she just wasn’t remotely interested in dating. She wanted to focus on her marketing career, and climbing the ladder at the company she worked for made Hank direct competition. Perhaps a promotion was coming up and Hank’s friendly act was merely a ruse to divert Saralynn’s attention.

    Saralynn! I heard you moved to the condo’s just up the street from me! Hank exclaimed excitedly through the line. Saralynn wasn’t sure if it was his unexpected volume or the fact that she lived close to him now that made her wince. 

    Well, if you live up the street from Glover’s Cove, then you would be right! Saralynn tried to return the enthusiasm. Two can play at this game, she thought.

    I do and that is awesome. Welcome to the neighborhood! He enthused. There is this sushi place that is walking distance between us. You want to meet up and get some dinner? I’m sure you are exhausted from moving, he requested. Saralynn noted a tone of genuine care in Hank’s voice. Still, she wasn’t going to be bested by
