Strength in Forgiveness
By Amanda Paradis
Letting go of trauma is something many abuse survivors have trouble doing. Jessie Santiago was fortunate enough not only to escape her abuse but to find closure and happiness as well. She first experienced physical and sexual abuse at a young age. Initially, she thought this was just how children were treated. She thought, I was being a real bad little girl and I was being punished.
She came to realize this was not normal, but she was taught to shut up about everything.
Growing up, she had no support system — no one to confide in. Santiago finally built up the courage and trust to confide in a friend about the sexual abuse she endured. Her friend encouraged her to speak out about what was going on. Unfortunately, Santiago’s mother did not believe her. Santiago stated, The first words out of her mouth were ‘You provoked him.’
According to Santiago, her mother’s words completely destroyed
her.
Shortly after confiding in her mother when she was 14, Santiago was kicked out of her house. Not having a place to live spurred her to move in and start a relationship with a 22-year-old man. Santiago became a wife in a way,
at a time she was not ready. Escaping her home was not escaping the abuse, however. She still endured physical abuse in her new home. This abuse became a pattern — a cycle she thought was going to continue for the rest of her life. The patterns of abuse led to a whirlwind of emotions. In her attempt to process her emotions, Santiago became depressed and searched for ways to fill the void. She turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain and became promiscuous in attempts to find love. She explains, I didn’t go about it the right way, but I didn’t know any better.
Years passed before Santiago began her healing process. She spent many years depressed and tried to take her life several times. It was not until a friend introduced her to religion that she truly began to heal.
