Let There Be Love - Bonnie Williams

The man in front of her looked worse every day. Henry Whitwood was a man in his fifties, but he had always seemed like a strapping youngster to Vera with his endless supply of vigor. That was before he caught something nasty. It had only been a few days ago that he started looking weak, and by now he already looked ready to fall over.

Vera tried to help by making him some soothing herbal tea. However, with Henry's illness also came a serious loss of appetite. The man hadn't touched food since he picked Vera up from the Romanov-on-Murman port. Right now he was even unable to stand. He sat down on a closed barrel of wine, looking out at sea with a pained expression on his face. Vera sat on the floor, her long black skirt fluttering in the wind despite her attempts to keep it still. Her hair received similar abuse thanks to the rough sea. She would have bristled yarn for hair by the time they reached America.

She was afraid that making any noise would make his headache worse. So she just silently looked out at sea, smelling the salty air all around her. Minutes ticked by with each breath, and Vera counted each one. She could be sewing a new dress right about now, but her concern for her friend took away all her attention.

How's your head fairing? she asked in her thick accent.

For a long while she received no response. He must've fallen asleep. She pulled out a piece of parchment from the folds of her dress and began to read. The sender told her of great tales about cowboys fighting the natives, the hot sun that shone all year long, and the bright yellow corn that bore fruit in the summer. In return she told him what her country was like. He responded that he would like to see it one day. This was just one of many, many letters he written to her.

Both Vera Zykov and Liam Whitwood both suffered from lack of family. Both had a love
