About this ebook

This edition of "Sense and Sensibility" has been carefully formatted for your ebook reader with a functional table of contents and contains all the original watercolor illustrations by C.E. Brock. Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, and was her first published work when it appeared in 1811 under the pseudonym "A Lady". A work of romantic fiction, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England between 1792 and 1797, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The novel follows the young ladies to their new home, a meagre cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak. The philosophical resolution of the novel is ambiguous: the reader must decide whether sense and sensibility have truly merged. Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

Author

Jane Austen

I'll be honest. I read "Pride and Prejudice" thrice, I loved it more every time... and none of Austen's books has been even close to as good since then. I love her use of language but her stories are just not engaging my interest. I got interested in S&S on chapter 47 (of 50)...

    A good line:

...and Marianne, who had the knack of finding her way in every house to the library, however it might be avoided by the family in general, soon procured herself a book.

I love anything by Jane Austen.

I love the three Dashwood sisters more than I can say, but even though being like Margaret not too long ago, I really understand Marianne's emotional standpoint lately. Elinor, I admire most, and understand the most. This novel defines kind gossip, happy endings, and how to place trust.

Much better than Emma. It was really funny and I loved the sisters. All of the characters were much more likeable and I really liked this book.

I found myself disliking Marianne. She was a bit of a selfish brat.

This book is a character study that is superbly well- written, however I found I was impatient with the extensive descriptions. I also had to reread to capture meaning. I could not finish this book.

It always takes me a while to get "into" her writing, the rhythm of her words, etc. but once I am there, I love it!

If you're a fan of Lydia and Kitty from Pride and Prejudice, you'll probably enjoy this book. It was largely about silly little nits trying to get married. It was amusing, but not nearly as good as P&P.

I didn't find Elinor Dashwood quite as appealing as Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice) or as funny as Emma Woodhouse (Emma) and would have to say, therefore, that I liked this book a bit less than those two. On the other hand, Austen's tongue in cheek comments about the unpleasant characters in the novel were delicious.Another recommended novel.

Two sisters who approach life and love in two very different ways.

I found the characters to somewhat self-absorbed and a bit silly. I couldn't empathise or feel any real emotion for their situations nor did I really care what happened to them.

And not even the gentlemen could sway me on this one! Just a bit disappointing.

I used to like this, but the last time I reread it, it seemed to me that Austen let the two best characters marry the wrong people, when they should have married each other.

My absolute favorite Austen novel! Yet somehow it's typically been overlooked for other, more famous, novels of hers, including in the classroom, which I think is a shame. This is a delightful work, and it is both representative of that era and shows off her talent quite well, IMO. If you've read anything of hers, but not this, and if you like any of it, please try this one out! Recommended.

I watched the film and fortunately, although it was disapointing,it didn't put me off reading the book. Good thing too as this book is fabulous.

Very likable characters, but I had a hard time getting into the story. This is the first Jane Austin book that I've read. I look forward to reading some of her other books.

I love Elinor, she is such a wonderful character, Marianne on the other hand is just exasperating. Her moping and ridiculous dramatics were tedious, I can't imagine being quite so understanding if I were in the same position as Elinor. I guess though that is the point ... Sense and Sensibility. I love Austen's biting sarcasm, she always manages to make me giggle and her bad characters really are awful, so it's easy to barack against them. An enjoyable read.

A very lively story discussing the freedom of going with your passions or the prudence of exerting self-discipline. Of course, a bit of both is needed. This is my second reading, and I still think the Emma Thompson movie did a great job of capturing the spirit of the characters. An interesting view into daily life of the time and how important money was then, too.

Finally finished reading this. I don't know if it was because it was my first read on a Kindle or not. But it took me a while to get into this book, it may even be that it isn't my usual genre. I liked it but not one of my favorites.

This book would have been perfect for my M.A. research on sensibility, and I wish that I had read it then. I don't know what I can say that would do Austen justice. This novel has the social commentary we are used to in Austen novels, plus an exploration of the inner life of the mind and its manifestions in the body. I also like what she does with gender in the novel. Men, we see, are less physically affected by a degenerate mind than are women. Fascinating. You have to read this book!

I listened to this one simultaneously with Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. Although the Sea Monsters version definitely highlighted the satire and humor behind the original book, I think I might have enjoyed this more without wondering how the Sea Monster version would change things up. Not my favorite Austen novel, but still enjoyable - a good classic.

Earlier this year I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time and was really looking forward to reading more Austen. Sense and Sensibility did not live up to the high standers I had set for it, but It was a good read. The slow start describing the family situation ruins the race of the story and makes it very had to get into. I had a problem with Marianne as a character, but I can see how she could be endearing to some. In short this was a classic worth reading.

Descriptions and dialog dominate the beginning of this book. It isn't until a third of the way in that the story begins move along. It can take a while to sort out the many characters, especially as each character is alternately mentioned by their first and last names. With entire families involved in the storyline, I found it difficult at times to determine which character was speaking. Overall this is a story with depth and a great deal of introspection.

Read this book in July/August of 2005. Also read it in July/August of 2007. Time to read it again.

This might be my favorite of Austen's books - yes, even more than Pride & Prejudice.

I very much enjoyed the book but thought the ending was one of those too good to be true endings. I really expected that at least one would get the not so happy ending. Over all though I did enjoy the story. I shall always enjoy a Jane Austen book.

Sense and Sensibility was not my favourite Jane Austen novel, but nevertheless it was still a worthwhile read. Some of the characters did not appeal to me in the least until the end of the novel. By the end of the novel it picked up and i was really enjoying it.

My second favorite Jane Austen novel. I love Elanor's equanimity and it has been an inspiration for many years. I love the representation of so many different characters in this first novel of Jane's and it is a great promise of the wonders to come.
