Do you think everything happens for a reason? You know, like love at first sight or fate? Destiny?

When Harmony Nelson first heard those words, she’d been standing in line for a convention. Her friend Myra Tiers, dressed all in black with fake fangs, deep black makeup and a goth look capable of making Ozzy Osborne capable of doing a double-take did the asking.

Harmony didn’t know how to reply. She was a nineteen year old girl with parental control problems and a rebellion streak longer than the Nile.

Myra asked again as they waited in line for FangCon, the largest gathering of vampire, werewolf and other famous monsters of the literary and cinematic world.

I don’t know, Myra, Harmony said, her voice half-annoyed. If fate or destiny exists, I sure hope I manage to get a real vampire boyfriend.

The girls laughed. Harmony knew the odds of her getting lucky enough to a vampire for her love at first sight were slim. She’d indulged her childhood fantasies of wishing on a star for the perfect vampire to walk into her life.

So far, she wound up with nothing but a handful of disappointment and a crappy love life.

Myra elbowed her arm. Never know, girl. Mr. RightFangs might be here tonight, She winked, corner of her mouth drawn up.

Harmony doubted it. As far as she concerned herself, she didn’t look anymore attractive than average. Even if Mr. Right walked up to her and she fell head over heals, there’s no way he would take a second look at her.

She let out a sigh, her eyes roaming the large hallway of the hotel where FangCon was going full swing. All around her, costumed fans walked in groups chattering about which panels they’d be going to, which special guest they wanted to see or when the Dealer’s room opened.

Harmony let her eyes roam until they fell on a young man leaning against the wall, his pale skin and dusty platinum hair cut in a stylish Adam Lambert style. Hell, he even had eyes as dark as Adam’s.

He wore a black FangCon t-shirt, black jeans and black combat boots to complete the faux vampire ensemble.

Harmony felt her heart begin to race. She couldn’t move her eyes from the young man. Everything about him seemed delicious and she found herself asking Myra to text her when she came to the front of the line.

Making her way across the floor, Harmony stopped short, lowering her eyes. What am I doing? Even if I did manage to not look like an idiot and talk to him, there’s no way he would even consider talking to me.

Turning on her heel, she made her way back to her friend’s side, glancing back at the wall only to find the young man gone.

What was that all about? Myra asked, eyebrow raised.

    Harmony shook her head. Nothing.

The girls finished up in line, picking up their badges and swag bags and making their way up to their hotel room they’d be staying at for the duration of the con.

Harmony set her bags down on the side of the bed closest to the window. She opened the blinds to see the skyscrapers of Seattle looking back at her. The lights all added to the intrigue of the city.

Ever since the Twilight craze, Forks, Washington had been a source of intrigue for die-hard fans. To feed off the hype, FangCon had been started in Seattle.

It was Harmony’s favorite convention ever since her family began falling apart at the seems. Her mother often became a single parent when her father went away on his business trips. At first, her mother seemed okay but soon they began fighting more and more.

As a result, Harmony’s father withdrew, leaving her mother as the soul parent. When Harmony hit her rebellious phase, her mother flipped, turning the arguments to her thus leading to Harmony getting into all sorts of trouble.

It wasn’t until after Myra came into Harmony’s life in middle school and introduced her to the world of I Dream of Dracula, an erotic, intense dark romance series that Harmony found some sense of balance in her life.

The series prodded a change in Harmony from casual blue jeans, t-shirts and sneakers to the world of crazy hair colors, fishnet stockings, combat boots and anything her mom considered unconventional.

Of course Harmony’s choices led to more fights but she didn’t care. She had her friends, her love for vampires and her own dabbling in drawing and dark poetry.

You okay? Myra asked. Her question breaking Harmony’s self-imposed trance.

Yeah, She replied. Want to go back down to the Dealer’s Room?

Myra nodded and the girls left their hotel room to head back to the convention.

At the opening of the Dealer’s Room, Harmony and Myra showed their badges and entered into the large room. Their eyes immediately became filled with all kinds of paraphernalia. Books, costume pieces, small figures for Dungeons and Dragons, and other Knick knacks like buttons, stickers and art lined both walls, spreading into middle aisles.

Harmony’s heart swelled with happiness, her mind free of the stresses of her life back at home. For this weekend, she decided she’d indulge in her fantasies and leave behind worry, doubt and fear.

Distracted, she bumped into a man she knew had to be at least in his early twenties. His skin as pale as the young man Harmony saw in the hotel’s lobby.

I’m so sorry! Harmony exclaimed, lowering her eyes as her cheeks heated.

It’s quite alright, Miss. I should’ve been watching where I was going as well, The young man had a thick accent, maybe Australian? Harmony had no idea. Enjoying the con?

Harmony nodded, her cheeks red. This man had looks any girl Harmony’s age would kill to be with.

The young man held out his hand. Name’s Trevor Bennett. What’s yours?

Harmony. Harmony Nelson. She replied, finding herself blushing.

Myra looked between the two, taking her friend’s arm. Would you excuse us for a minute? She asked Trevor then took Harmony aside. Girl, what is your problem? Hello? Hot guy alert and he seems to really like you.

A knot the size of a small apple formed in Harmony’s throat. Doubt crept into her mind trying to make sense of why Trevor was being so polite.

No, he’s probably just being nice. She tried to turn and walk away.

Myra stepped behind her, shoving her forward. Oh no, you’re going to talk to him, She kept shoving until they reached Trevor. My friend here is a bit weird around nice looking guys. She’d be happy to meet you, say, for lunch in the cafe downstairs?

Trevor’s mouth lit up in a smile. It would be my pleasure, He replied. Until then, enjoy yourselves. With those last words, Trevor handed Harmony hit number scribbled on a receipt, turned on his heel and was gone.

The girls continued walking around the large room. Each made their purchases of buttons, stickers, more make-up and books.

Harmony picked up some new false fangs for a cosplay she’d been working on while Myra bought a new tote bag with the crest of Damien Drake from I Dream of Dracula.

Damien is so hot. I hope Jewel winds up with him, Myra cooed, almost sighing.

No way, Harmony snapped. She has to choose Raymond or I riot.

The girls laughed again at their rival choices for the love interest of the heroine of I Dream of Dracula.

Which panel do you want to go to first? Myra asked.

    Harmony
