    HEARTFELT

    CHAPTER ONE

Of course! Of course! I'd love to help out, Harley Harris smiled broadly but then stopped herself from looking too cheerful. She couldn't help it, whenever she got happy she looked more like an excitable ten year old girl rather than a twenty-three year old woman. That sounds like a lot of fun.

If you can be here, oh, tomorrow at nine? It just takes some time to set up.

Harley nodded her head. Of course! she said again. I can hold my end of any conversation she though sarcastically.

Really appreciate you coming through like this, Pastor Owen said. Theresa has been sick and she's usually in charge of stuff of the bake sale. Thanks so much.

    Of course.

Pastor Gabriel Owen was a great speaker who could be a little cold in dealing with people one on one. But once Harley got to know him she appraised him as being a great guy, just a little shy. He looked like real-life version of Yosemite Sam with his handle-bar mustache and bright red beard.

Steve? Harley's heart began beating fast. She had no idea that Steve Forsythe would be involved.

    Yeah, Owen said.

Harley thought she caught a smirk in the pastor's face.

Steve had dated her best friend Shannon for a year before they broke up last summer. They had been the model couple around the church. They both looked like they could be on the poster for a Christian dating service or a church promotional flyer. They were the beautiful people.

Until she dumped him for a high-powered attorney.

She would see Steve in church and could tell from his body language how hurt he was. She saw a terrible loneliness in his face. A decent man caught in a confusion of being involved with someone who didn't desire intimacy. He looked utterly and desperately alone. And determined to stay that way so he would never be hurt again.

She would never hurt him like that. But then again, Steve
