    SEEING AMISH

    Chapter 1

Sara had kept her husband’s secret, even though it went against everything she had ever been led to believe was true. She loved Samuel. They had married as soon as they were baptized into the church. She had been eighteen. He had been nineteen. But Samuel had told Sara he would not give up his love for playing football. Sara still remembered the conversation perfectly, even though it had taken place two weeks ago.

"I don’t think Gott would give me such a love for something I’m not supposed to do."

But Samuel, Sara had protested as they spoke in the privacy of their newly built home. "Wouldn’t Gott have the church elders allow it if it were something that brought you closer to Him?"

"Perhaps, this shall give me a chance to talk to the others about Gott," Samuel suggested.

Sara swallowed. She dared not contradict her husband, but she felt as though if he made a choice to continue spending time with his Englischer friends, then he would only fall into trouble.

I’m afraid that the elders shall find out about your disobedience to the church’s rules. I don’t want to be shunned from the community. This community has been my family. They have always been here when I needed them.

Samuel had placed his hand on hers. She had snuggled up to his shoulder with a feeling of dread coursing through her. Why did Samuel want this so badly?

I don’t think it’s an accident that I was able to get a spot on the team, Samuel said, his thumb stroking the back of her hand. I really believe that I should take it.

I don’t want to go, Sara said, the tears rising to the surface. Perhaps she was being a bit of a baby, but Samuel was asking her to leave everything she had ever known.

What if. . .only I went? Samuel suggested slowly.

Sara’s heart dropped. Surely, Samuel couldn’t mean that. Family was everything in the Plain community. What could be so important that Samuel wanted to leave her? Did he really feel as though being on this football team was more important than his marriage to her? They had only been married a year and a half, and Sara was expecting their first child. Surely he wouldn’t leave her behind to take care of the child by herself.

Sara turned and let Samuel see how upset his suggestion was making her. I don’t want to be separated from you either, Sara said. You know I love you.

I love you too, Samuel said, giving her a light kiss on her lips. I hope you are not doubting my love for you. The fact is that I want to accept the position. I would be paid. It would be enough money to buy whatever we need for our baby.

Would you come back? Sara asked.

Samuel nodded, smiling a little. Of course I would come back. I won’t leave you behind. Surely, you don’t think I am abandoning you.

Sara shook her head, even though that was exactly what she had been thinking. How long would you be gone?

It would be a few months, Samuel said. I would come for visits sometimes when I have the money and the time away from training.

Sara bit her lip and shook her head. She didn’t want to be separated from her husband for any amount of time. "I would be here. . .in the house, all alone. Why would you choose baptism if you were so sure you wanted to continue in the Englisch lifestyle? I’ve kept your secret, Sara said, becoming frustrated. But it’s asking a lot of me to stay here on my own, while I’m expecting a child, and answer the community’s questions on
