Crushing on the Bad Boy - Heather Scarlett

    Chapter One

He’d walked into a bridal magazine cover shoot. At least, that’s what it looked like. Tyler Morgan assessed the damage to his sister, Sarah’s, small living room. Huge puffs of fluffy white material covered the floor as far as the eye could see. He was fairly certain his sister was in there somewhere.

Hello, he called, reaching down to push bridal magazines out of his path. Anyone home?

A muffled sound came from the corner, under the white cloudy material. Ah, he’d found Sarah.

Reaching into the mess of tulle, he found his sister’s ponytail and tugged, as was their tradition. Hey sis.

Instead of the jubilant greeting he was expecting, he was rewarded with an indignant screech before the pile of fabric rose from the floor. It didn’t come to shoulder height, as Sarah would have. The fluff ball stopped well below that and was still emitting a high-pitched squeal. This was not Sarah. Unless her engagement had drastically changed her.

Petite hands with perfect pink nail polish parted the fabric, and he had his first glance at the irate nymph he had disturbed. This was not his sister. This woman was petite, brunette, and mad as all get out. Her eyes flashed with irritation.

What do you think you’re doing? You can’t just walk into a stranger’s house and…. manhandle them!

She ran her hands over her auburn hair, smoothing the pieces that came loose from her low, sleek ponytail. A far cry from Sarah’s loose, hastily tied, pony.

A last thrust of the fabric to the floor and the woman stood and stepped over it to face Tyler. She pulled herself up to her full height, which couldn’t be over 5’2". She wore dark rinse jeans with a crease that suggested recent pressing and a pink blouse tucked neatly into the jeans. Her practical silver flats perfectly matched the tie in her low ponytail.

Whoever this woman was, she could not be a friend of Sarah’s. She looked way too uptight. He cocked his head, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe. Yet she looked vaguely familiar, as if they may have met before. That wasn’t uncommon in a small town like Wildwood Falls. It seemed everyone knew everyone else. It really didn’t matter how long he was away from home. Every time he returned, ghosts of his past rose to greet him.

Do I know you? he asked.

The woman gave him a look that would eviscerate a lesser man on the spot.

    I’m sure you don’t. I don’t associate with… ruffians.

"Ruffians? Did I stumble back in time to the 50s?
