    Prologue

    Las Vegas, teenage years.

One day, sweet pea, Harmony predicted as she braided her daughter’s hair, you’ll find the most unexpected man in the most unexpected place. He’ll give you the one thing you’ve wanted all of your life and could never find.

Kaitlyn stared back at her mother through the long, wall-to-floor-length mirror in Harmony’s bedroom. Her dark, shoulder-length coils glistened with almond oil, as did her brown skin. Many bangles on her wrist dangled every time she moved.

Her mother was a natural stunner with little makeup. She always had suitors, but never anyone serious. She didn’t want to go through the pain of divorce again. Kaitlyn could say her mother had a harem of her own–all the men knew about each other, and all respected their roles in her life.

She could do without them, but they couldn’t do without her.

What’s that, Mama? Kaitlyn asked. Her mother was rather good at reading cards and predicting the future. Over the years, her apothecary shop had grown into a respected business that didn’t just sell false hopes and dreams.

Harmony became a well-known clairvoyant who could predict the future rather accurately. She never promised a guy would call or someone would get rich quick, but she always told the truth, even if it was something they didn’t want to hear.

Harmony leaned over and kissed the middle part of her daughter’s hair. Love and stability.

Harmony was a minimalist before it came in style. Her shop looked like a small boutique and it spruced everything. Incense was in one section, separated by brand. Palo santo sticks were next to them, separated by size. The different sages–along with how to use them and their purposes– were in another section.

There was no fear of bumping into anything or knocking something over. Harmony was too much of a neat freak. There was never a clutter pathway to anything. The dollar amounts were always visible with a large sign–no negotiations.

Kaitlyn knew her mother had the shop because she truly believed in the universe and everything that it entailed. Harmony didn’t need the shop; whatever dollar amount the divorce settlement was, Harmony didn’t worry about paying for Kaitlyn to go to a four-year university.

What? Kaitlyn scoffed. You’ve given me that. Several times over.

No, Harmony shook her head and met her daughter’s eyes through the mirror. From a man.

Kaitlyn knew her mother referred to her father, and even Kaitlyn’s failed relationships. Her father, Harold, had little to no contact with Kaitlyn and she couldn’t say she missed him that much. She barely liked him when her parents were together, therefore the divorce and his subsequent disappearing act didn’t make her miss him. She was a teenager now, and in a couple of months she would leave her mother’s home and explore college.

She’d heard about the many stories of frat parties, endless amounts of beer pong games, and college foolishness from social media. She was eager to explore that for herself. Are you saying I’m going to find my soul mate in college?

I’m saying you’ll find him in a place you would least expect it. He would not be your first choice. You might even loathe the idea of being in a relationship with him. Harmony nodded as Kaitlyn’s eyebrow quirked up. But he’ll be what you need.

I don’t understand, Kaitlyn didn’t want to freak out, but her mother had a slick way of doing just that without trying. Why would I want to be with someone who I don’t like because he’ll give me what I need?

    I didn’t say you wouldn’t like him.

    Okay, someone I don’t love?

I didn’t say that, either. Harmony replied. "I said you might hate the idea of being in a relationship with him but he’ll be perfect for you."

Kaitlyn didn’t understand how anyone would give her mother all of their money just for her to be vague as she is. She could understand if Jane Schmane wanted to know if ‘he was the one?’ or if ‘she was going to find her soul mate?’.

Kaitlyn didn’t understand why her mother felt the need to pull that same stunt with her only daughter. It was rather annoying. Why would I hate the idea of being in a relationship with someone even though he’s perfect for me?

Harmony started another braid. Because it might involve him in some things you don’t like, that’s why.

    Such as?

That I don’t know. Harmony’s voice was smooth like warmed honey. I just know you wouldn’t like it.

Kaitlyn folded her lips in frustration. Her mother gave her just enough to pull her in and to leave her hanging. Okay. She blew out a harsh breath. And what else?

Harmony considered. He’ll be good with his hands.

    Hmm… Kaitlyn spoke aloud. … like a carpenter? A plumber? A mechanic?

Harmony nodded as she continued to braid. Something like that.

Okay. Kaitlyn could see it. She wasn’t a traditionalist, but it wouldn’t hurt to be with someone who was a handyperson. Learning how to fix things around the house was a lost skill. I guess that’ll work. The lawyer and the mechanic.

You still want to go to law school, baby? Harmony asked.

Yeah. Kaitlyn had the idea when she was a little girl. She remembered overhearing her mother speaking in harsh, but hushed tones, about how Harold was fucking her over with child support. He didn’t want a relationship with his oldest daughter, but didn’t want to pay child support, neither.

Harold, a medium-complected Black man, couldn’t understand why Kaitlyn turned out nearly as dark as Harmony and not more like his complexion. Three different DNA tests proved he was her father. Harold still contested it.

Harmony paid top dollar for one of the best lawyers in Las Vegas to ensure not only would Harold continue to pay child support, but he would also pay her lawyer fees with an extra fuck you bonus to Harmony for wasting her time.

Kaitlyn knew she wanted to be a lawyer, more specifically, a divorce attorney. She didn’t tell her mother that for the fear of her mother’s reaction. Harmony never discouraged her daughter from anything, but always warned her to do things with her head instead of her heart.

It was a lesson Kaitlyn would never quite learn.
