A Botched Robbery
Detective Joe Zuma received the call at 10:05 and by 10:17, he and his associate arrived at the bank to see four young men lying on the ground. He laughed out loud upon arriving at the bank where this botched bank robbery by the four males, two black and two Latinos, had taken place. He never laughed at suspects unless they had spoken so this was unusual behavior that his colleague Pat Vasquez noticed. Zuma did not reflect on his laughter. For him, it just looked funny. The security guard proudly described to Zuma that the four of them were very nervous when they showed up at the bank’s door and could barely handle their guns.
If I opened the door for them and let them go first, I would be able to press the alarm button which is outside, then silent, and that would take less than fifteen minutes for you guys to show up. Man, were those kids surprised.
Zuma leaned down and spoke.
"What’s the matter with you kids?
Have you all lost that lovin’ feelin’?"
He began singing the words.
"You’re trying hard not to show it
But baby I know it.
You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling."
The four young men and Pat Vasquez stared at Zuma as if he was from another planet. They had no idea what he was doing, and Pat was also unsure. He had often heard Zuma sing songs appropriate to a situation but never to suspects. He decided not to say anything about the laugh or the singing.
The young men were taken to Zuma’s precinct. He grilled them trying to find out what they needed money for, who put them up to it, and what they were going to do with the money. They say the idea came from something they saw on TV and it looked easy. They enjoyed buying the guns and practicing at a firing range. His conclusion was that these were innocent, naive kids. They had no records. He tells them he is not even going to book them but asks if they have ever seen the rain, and before they can answer he starts singing again:
"There’s a calm before the storm.
I know it’s been coming for some time.
When it’s over so they say
It’ll rain a sunny day.
I wanna know have you ever seen the rain?"
Boss, I think we can let the kids go.
"Sure, Pat. I’m happy to let them go. It’s nice to see young people who can get along even for a botched robbery. Maybe they know the famous I Have a Dream speech. Do you know it, kids?"
The boys were speechless and stared at each other, shook their heads no, and left as Pat gave them a nod to leave.
Boss, what do you think you were doing with the laughing, the singing, and the reference to Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech?
Just trying to educate Pat, just trying to educate.
Pat Vasquez knew something was off with his boss. He had worked with Zuma for ten years and seen him pursue all kinds of criminals with diligence and respect. He had tremendous respect for Zuma’s intelligence and judgments. He had sung to Pat many times songs that captured the real situations they were encountering but
