To my children, who should always stop by.
Lindsey was nervous. It’d been a long time since she’d seen her mother in person, but when she saw the last-minute airfare deal to San Diego, she had to jump on it. She couldn’t get that close to Pasadena and not stop to see Lillian in person. It would be an adventure! Still, her finger hovered over the call button.
What if her mom already had plans?
How would she explain being in California?
Wasn’t it kind of rude to just show up, unannounced?
Don’t be silly, she said to herself. She’s your mother. She’ll be happy to see you. But deep down, Lindsey wasn’t so sure.

Some were harmless, like the woman taking a pie out of the oven at Arnold Tull’s place. Others were heartbreaking, like the lonely children at the Hilton ranch. Then there were incidents like the Harrelson House, that made Lindsey want to pack her bags and never go back.
The thick yellow sweater that had suited the weather perfectly in Chicago hung off her in the California heat... or maybe it was anxiety making her sweat. Either way, she had to stop it if she wanted to look presentable. She wished she had a change of clothes in her bag alongside her ticket heading home just after midnight.
Terminal 2 of the San Diego airport was home to a
