    I sat at my grandmother’s kitchen table, in my usual seat, the same one I’ve been sitting in since I was big enough to choose for myself. Near the fridge and against the wall. Even as a kid I must have sensed I’d need to have my back to the wall when dealing with my grandmother, the tiny woman her fifteen grandkids all still call Vó. Though the word is the Portuguese diminutive of grandmother, the only thing small about her is her size.

    She had invited me down to Fall River for lunch. I came partly because she had promised me cacoila, a spicy beef stew. But mostly I was here because she was my and if she called, I came. Still, I knew I wasn’t here just for lunch. And I knew she wouldn’t tell me the real reason for the invite until she felt like it—and maybe not even then.
