    CHAPTER 1

    Introduction

There is a plethora of information available on self-esteem, self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-respect, self-confidence, self-love, self-care, and so on. However, there is truly little on self-value.  Yet, value is the most vital ‘self’ concept of them all. Whilst self-value and self-worth are often used interchangeably there is in fact a notably different. Whilst having a sense of self-value means that you believe you are worthy – having a sense of self-worth does NOT mean that you value yourself.

Self-value and self-worth are indeed different. The disparities can be subtle and there can be overlap, yes. However, value is the foundation of esteem which determines your worth and what you will and will not accept in all areas of your life. For example, it is possible to feel worthy of love without valuing yourself.  In this instance you will accept love in any form - even toxic love. Conversely, if you value yourself, you will intrinsically know that you are worthy of healthy, unconditional love. Value and worth are not the same thing. By understanding and developing your innate value, all the other self-concepts will begin to fall into place in your life.

Worth is temporal, whilst value is transcendental. The first relates to worldly standards whereas the latter is ordained by our creator. This can be further understood by this analogy: If you went to buy a brand-new sports car from a car showroom, it is going to be worth a lot of money. The minute you drive that car off the parking lot it begins to depreciate. Over time the wear and tear of the car will mean that is worth significantly less than what you purchased it for. The car may become less useful to you because of mechanical issues, or you could completely write it off in an accident deeming it worthless.

In a similar way self-worth, which can be defined as how you feel you deserve to be treated or respected, can change or be affected over time based on your childhood, your life experiences, your environment or other circumstances that are perhaps outside of your control.

In contrast, self-value can be viewed in terms of you being a precious stone or gem. A diamond that has been dug up, cut, refined, and made into jewellery, has the exact same value attached to it as when it was in the dirt underground. Its value does not depreciate with time or fluctuate because of circumstance. The importance, significance and usefulness of a diamond is perpetual and unremitting.

Understanding and having the knowledge of how to apply value to your life is fundamental to your personal development, improvement, growth and levelling up in your life. It is the very foundation to break negative and repetitive cycles of self-sabotage, lack of boundary setting, people pleasing and other self-debilitating traits.

The dictionary defines value as follows:

"The regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Having principles or standards of behaviour; one's judgement of what is important in life."

Value application will enable you to start to be treated with the honour and importance that you deserve. You will actualise your uniqueness that is worthy of admiration because your usefulness is unique and has a purpose in this world. You will learn to develop principles and standards for yourself that will change your behaviour toward yourself and others. Ultimately this will allow you
