The Second book in the series. This one is about Estelle Brannagh finding love with an Irish man while they're both in Florence and they eventually go from arranged marriage to love while working out each others issues.I really enjoyed the read and found the characters interesting. I'm looking forward to finishing the series.

It's always a treat to pick up a book by Ms. Kaye. I've been on a tear of crime/noir books lately, but I didn't want to go back to romance until I had her latest in my hands. (It's too early for Christmas - I'm saving the duet for next month, while I'm anxiously awaiting the final book in this series!)This is the third of the Penniless Brides of Convenience series, and stars the third and final sister, Estelle. Estelle is wandering around Florence when she spots a striking man, to whom she feels drawn. Three days later, he musters up the courage to talk to her, and the embark on a veritable whirlwind romance. Each are running from their "real" lives, and each are enjoying the world they've conjured up in this foreign land. They know they will eventually have to say goodbye...until they realize that they won't. Both want to be parents, neither wants the entanglement of passion, so why can't they be the solution to each other's problem and forge a marriage of convenience? So they cap off their whirlwind romance with a hasty marriage by special license, and they they descend back to the real world.Estelle's new husband is Aidan Malahide, and Irish aristocrat who lives in a real life castle, rather appropriately named Cashel Duairc ("Dark Castle"). He's been running from demons, but knows that if he is to move on with his life, he needs to face them. So, with Estelle in tow, Aidan returns to his estate and has a go at putting his life back together. In contrast to the first 100 pages of sunny romance in Florence, the rest of the book has a distinctly Gothic feel, with the spooky castle, the ambiguity of the servants, and a folly of ruin on an island in the lake, which Aidan refuses to let Estelle visit. This was very nicely done - not too creepy, not too silly. Aidan's past is eating away at him, and because he refuses to unburden himself to Estelle, she's powerless to stop it, and its making them both miserable. How could they possibly have a happily ever after? It's certainly hard-earned, I'll give you that. Aidan's guilt is so overwrought at times that it's too much. I certainly understand where it comes from, and that he was quite young when he went through it, but it was still too much. Even so, I liked the ending: both Aidan and Estelle finally get out of their own way and let a lot of stuff go, events in the past that they had no control over, in order to embrace what they can control: their future.I didn't like this book as much as A Wife Worth Investing In, but it's certainly better than The Earl's Countess of Convenience, so I graded it accordingly. Ms. Kaye had nicknamed this story her "Irish Gothic" on Twitter while she was writing it, and I remember the trouble she shared having with it during the writing phase. I can certainly understand her hardship - dealing with a character like Aidan is not easy, no matter how talented you are. But none of that hardship comes through in the story itself - like her other work, her storytelling is graceful and effortless. Ms. Kaye really is one of the best writing in this genre today. I have slowly but surely been collecting her backlist, and am looking forward to visiting Cornwall for Christmas ♥ and beyond. I'm also deadly curious about the final book in this quartet, finally learning more about Aunt Kate and the conspicuously absent Uncle Daniel!! Their marriage of convenience has been the ideal for which all the Brannagh sisters strived, and the hints we've seen throughout the first three books have been intriguing appetizers!
