Donna and Sara
There wasn't a lot to do in May. It was late spring/early summer and still very windy on the coast of Maine. Donna, almost 17, and Sara, a year older, were tired of practicing tennis and basketball.
The ocean was way too cold and the public beaches weren't open until late June.
How about The Whale?
Donna said.
What's The Whale?
It's a miniature golf place. They have food. It's great. Right next door.
O.K. Let's go.
It was a two or three minute walk to The Whale Miniature Golf and Snack Bar.
Donna and Sara went up to the counter. Maybe after we eat we'll do nine,
Donna said.
Nine? Nine what?
Nine holes. Miniature golf.
Oh. Miniature golf,
Sara said, leaning to her right to look over the course. In the middle of nine green fairways, fake ponds and storybook figurines, was a gigantic blue plaster whale, advertising the location.
