About this ebook

Presents an expansive new index of Pairpoint (and predecessor Mt. Washington) cut and engraved decorative designs of the Brilliant Era and beyond. Comprising over 5,500 entries in design name (or number) order, citations were accumulated and integrated from seven sources. The resulting index provides coverage of several hundred distnct designs, enabling quick access to printed as well as online examples of hundreds of shapes and designs. This list provids invaluable cross-referencing, research and pattern identification support that was not previously available. The underlying data was accumulated and organized by the 2020-21 Mt. Washington/Pairpoint Research Project, working with these seven information sources:

ACGA 2013 Mt. Washington catalogs printed compendium revised and corrected; the ACGA 1991 Pairpoint printed catalog compendium; reprints of advertisements published by Mt. Washington and Pairpoint.in the LABAC Brilliant Cut Glass Advertisements Books 1 thru 6; the online Frost Pairpoint Knowledge Center Identification Catalog pages; the 2020 Version 1 Mt. Washington Patterns Sampler, available online in the ACGA Website Members Only ShowPlace; the three-part 2021 Version 1 Pairpoint Patterns Sampler, online in the ACGA Website Members Only ShowPlace; and the original Pairpoint catalog reprinted in the LABAC 2002 "PU" book.

LABAC has opted to release this material in economical eBook form, so that it becomes more accessible to the growing population of online Brilliant Cut Glass collectors.

Author

Rob Smith

The Expansive Pairpoint Design Name Index eBook is Rob's eighth cut glass eBook. He and wife Val have previously edited or authored more than four dozen glass-related paper books. Rob formulated a plan for the 2011 Master Index of Cut Glass Patterns, then recruited the tenacious team that accumulated, validated and integrated those lists. Rob and Val edited and illustrated the data, designed and published the resulting three-volume reference. Rob also developed the Cut Glass Pattern Identification Flash Card concept, and has so far created eleven different 100-card sets. A long-time collector and student of Brilliant Era cut glass. Rob writes frequently for the ACGA Hobstar, and has published hundreds of cut glass photographs. Rob and Val began collecting American Brilliant Era cut glass in Austin more than thirty years ago, and became active members of the ACGA Lone Star Chapter. Since moving Midwest from the Bay Area, they've refined and expanded their diverse cut glass collection, which they greatly enjoy. Favored shapes in cut glass are loving cups, mugs of all sizes, napkin rings and butter pats.

Expansive Pairpoint Design Name Index - Rob Smith

    Published by V-R Information Systems

    Special Interest Books Since 1978

FRONT COVER:   (TOP) This boilermaker set (beer mug or stein and whiskey tumbler) is cut in the Corona pattern by Pairpoint.  The decoration consists of vertical lines of beading that separate panels of four-sided St. Louis Diamond.  The tall slender corset-form whiskey tumbler has a rayed star bottom and is 2 3/4 tall.  It has a 1 1/16 fire polished rim diameter, a 1 3/16 diameter bottom and only 1.2 oz. fluid capacity.  The beer stein blank was probably mold-blown.  It has a rayed star bottom and is 4 tall.  The fire polished inward-curving stein rim has a 2 ¾ opening above a 3 5/16 diameter bottom, providing 11 oz. of fluid capacity. The beer stein can be seen on page 129 (Negative No. 257, published sometime between mid-1904 to April 1906) of the ACGA Pairpoint catalog compendium.

(Bottom) The fist with pointing finger is a typographic mark, called an index,. Other names for the symbol include manicule, printer's fist, bishop's fist,  and pointing hand.  Pointing hands were used in the signage outside the bar Cheers in Boston, part of a Victorian decorative theme. The symbol originates in scribal tradition of the medieval and Renaissance period, appearing in the margin of manuscripts to mark corrections or notes.  Unicode (V1, 1991) in the special Symbols Block defines U+261B as black right pointing index.

    Preface

THIS EIGHTH LABAC EBOOK presents an expansive index of Pairpoint (and predecessor Mt. Washington) cut and engraved decorative designs of the Brilliant Era and beyond.  Comprising over 5,500 entries in design name (or number) order, citations were accumulated and integrated from multiple sources.  The resulting index enables quick access to printed as well as online examples of hundreds of shapes and designs, providing invaluable research and pattern identification support.  This index material was accumulated and organized by the 2020-21 Mt. Washington/Pairpoint Research Project, and a copy of these results have been made available to all participants or contributors to that work.

The seven information sources indexed and their reference abbreviations include—

.....ACGAM....The ACGA 2013 Mt. Washington catalogs printed compendium, with revised and corrected CAT4 entries.

.....ACGAP.....The ACGA 1991 Pairpoint printed catalog, a compendium of loose-leaf pages (based on a revised and greatly enhanced index).

.....AD1-6.......Reprints in Brilliant Cut Glass Advertisements Books 1 thru 6 of cut glass promotions published by Mt. Washington and Pairpoint.

.....FROST......The Frost Pairpoint Knowledge Center Identification Catalog pages, available online and elsewhere.

.....MTW20....The 2020 Version 1 Mt. Washington Patterns Sampler, online in the ACGA Website Members Only ShowPlace, and available elsewhere.

.....PAI20.......The 2021 Version 1 Pairpoint Patterns Sampler, online in the ACGA Website Members Only ShowPlace, and available elsewhere.

.....PUP..........The 2003 LABAC Cycle #3 original Pairpoint catalog reprinted in the PU book.

The flowing text model used by modern eBooks to accommodate text presentation on various screen sizes and devices poised numerous challenges related to indexing.  Neither tabs nor tables are supported in eBooks, so embedded periods have been used to create a pseudo-columnar index format.  In addition, the normal folding of long text strings into multi-line index entries was not available in flowing text. Please forgive the seemingly irregular and sometimes confusing presentation of this index material.  It was manually reformatted, after considerable experimentation and frustration with inadequate automated formatting approaches.

Design Name Abbreviations.  The following abbreviations have been used to shorten some of the longer design names:

.....Dia Diamond,  Hex Hexagon, Oct octagon, Eng Engraved, & and, Geom Geometric, HS hobstar, Intag Intaglio.

Shape and Function Abbreviations. Shape entries are the usually numbered but infrequently named shape references found on most (but not all) Pairpoint catalog pages.  Function refers to the usual name of the usage commonly associated with the form.  Because of the extreme amount of effort required to manually format longer eBook indices, neither shape- nor form-sorted indices are envisioned to be published.  Contact the author for access to corresponding spreadsheet data.  The following abbreviations are used to shorten some longer descriptive function notes:

.....Hdl handle, w/ with, w/o without, plt plate, rnd round, rect rectangle or rectangular, ctr center or centre, clr clear,

.....cig cigarette, hldr holder, ped pedestal, cyl cylinder, CT cut to, CTC Cut to clear, mayo mayonnaise, cvr cover.

Negative Number References. Most Pairpoint catalog pages include a conventional bottom corner text block that includes a differentiation negative number, evidently a reference to a photographic negative used in page publication. Unfortunately, over the years Pairpoint assigned the same negative number to multiple page images. There are usually zero or one negative number reuses, but a few negative numbers got reused many times. Most of the indexed sources do not differentiate between distinct pages sharing a negative number. Frost references multiple-use negative numbers as 999.1, 999.2, ...999.8 etc., using numeric suffixes to distinguish these pages. When Frost leaves off the trailing version modifier, this means that the Frosts know of only a single Pairpoint page assigned that negative number. In a few cases, the Pairpoint factory appended letter suffixes to distinguish between pages having a shared negative number, so a few negative numbers in the index are of the form 999A, 999B, etc.

Pattern & Shape Dating Research.  Much Pairpoint-related research remains undone.  Text associated with each bottom corner text block can be used to assign surprisingly tight publication date ranges to most Pairpoint catalog pages.  This would enable the assignment of product activity date ranges for many of the Pairpoint shapes and designs. For more information, see "The Pairpoint Dating Game" by Kohut & Smith, ACGA Hobstar, Vol. 25 No. 9 (June, 2003), pp. 1,  8-18. In some cases, index citation descriptive comments for MTW and PAI advertisement content includes ad publication year.

Cross-References.  The MTW and PAI Pattern Sampler indices include in their descriptions some cross reference citations of the form SORC 999 where SORC is an abbreviation referencing one of the information sources found or used by the Mt. Washington/Pairpoint Research Project. The complete list of project source abbreviations and their meanings are found online in the backmatter sections of the ACGA website ShowPlace presentations of the MTW and PAI Patterns Samplers.  Scans of many of those reference materials have been distributed to project participants and several glass-related museums.

Engraved Numbered Designs.  An attempt was made to index all numbered designs consistently as No. 999 possibly followed by an additional differentiation notation [such as Engraved, Geometric, Hobstar, Pinwheel] or a theme note [Rye, Roses, etc].  Unfortunately, a few numbered designs were unintentionally indexed under the Eng. No. 999 notation as appears on occasional catalog pages.

Similarity of Design Names. Mt. Washington (and later Pairpoint) sometimes used long and relatively complex design names.  The long design names are sometimes grouped into families with a shared name composition template.  Caution should be used when associating designs into families, for the name templates are often subtly different.  For example, the designs family having the name template SharedMotif Engraved Y is distinct from the family SharedMotif Panel Engraved Y, both of which are distinct from the group of designs named SharedMotif and Y.

During preparation of this index, it became obvious that there is quite a lot that we do not yet know about Pairpoint and its products. We hope that this index will help stimulate research regarding the extensive Brilliant Era cut and engraved glass created by Mt. Washington and Pairpoint.  Clearly, this firm was an innovator and major producer of the cut glass that we all appreciate.

10 1/2 long, 4 7/8 wide, 1 1/2" tall rectangular celery cut in the Mt. Washington No. 60 pattern on a colorful ruby cased over clear glass blank.  In this version of the generic Russian design buttons have uncut ruby tops.  The eight facet hobs are characteristic of Russian patterns produced by several cutting houses.  (Persian pattern hobs have twelve facets, and the Hawkes McDonald buttons have six sided rayed star buttons.)  See the ACGA Mt. Washington Catalogs compendum, pp. PC-7 and CAT1-4 item 6 (lower); "The Enigmatic McDonald Pattern, by V. L. Davison, Hobstar CNP 5360-63 (Sept, 2009); and a well-researched online essay The Russian and Persian Motif Patterns" by the late Jim Havens through  www.brilliantglass.com/a-guide-to-abcg/motifs-table-of-contents.

Three- and four-pint Pairpoint shape No. 400 jugs cut in the 3 Cut Octagon Panel Engraved Pond Lily design, as seen on PAI21.A15.  The engraved vertical vesicas are bounded by beading, and the surrounding octagonal hobs have tops of crosscutting. Also see ACGAP page 104 (negative 431).  Camp photos.
