    Foreword

In this book Affordable UK University Education (www.AffordableUKUni.com) Toks K. Oyegunle has created a simple process that can really help anyone to get an affordable UK university education, through a flexible, modular, pay-as-you-go (PAYG) approach that you can do from Nigeria.

There does not seem to be much information available freely on this important topic, and what is there, is spread all over the place, in complex language. What Toks sets out in this book is simple, but little known. Many UK educators will not even be aware of the simple way the UK Education system works, which Toks explains very well and clearly in this book.

This book emerges as an extremely important tool for how people in Nigeria can obtain an affordable UK university degree, a BA/BSc/MBA/MSc/MA degree qualification from a wide selection of well-known British universities; reputable undergraduate and postgraduate degree qualifications that are recognised and respected worldwide.

Simply put, this book provides a timely and simple ‘do it yourself’ step-by-step guide. What is wonderful about this, is that there’s not just one way of doing this correctly, there’s not just one ‘solution’ that has to fit all. What Toks provides is a technique, which means that depending on your current circumstances, and the education level that you currently have, and the career that you want to progress onto in the future, he gives a method for how you can progress onto a relevant degree course of your choosing and gain an affordable UK university degree. You can tailor each part of your path to gaining a degree, choosing from a wide variety of qualifications, which meet your specific interests, and the best part of this, is that you can do it from Nigeria at a much cheaper cost than if you were to go yourself or send your child to be educated in the UK.

This book is a MUST read for people that want to know how to obtain affordable UK university education from Nigeria.

    Preface

My name is Toks, and I see myself as a simple Technology Entrepreneur and Investor, who also loves to teach through writing and speaking. As an author, I have written a few books and eBooks mostly focussed on helping people succeed by improving their lives and businesses. I passionately believe in education and self-development, and this has led me to read thousands of books and attend many seminars and workshops across the world.

As a student, I have been fortunate to attend the Moshood Abiola (previously Ogun State) Polytechnic, the University of Lagos and also the Lagos Business School in Nigeria. In the United Kingdom, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the South Bank University and the City University. I am also an alumnus of Harvard Business School in the United States. As a parent, I have also put my children through the British education system at all levels. Due to all these experiences, I fully understand how the education system in Nigeria and the UK works. This understanding, coupled with a strong desire to help people succeed through education, is what led me to start thinking about how to help people in Nigeria access British University Education at an affordable cost.

In this book, I want you to learn from my experiences and to benefit from what I’ve learned. I will share with you the little-known secret of how you can get an affordable UK degree from a wide variety of UK Universities. It is so little-known, that many UK educators, teachers and lecturers aren’t even aware of how their own education system works. That said, there is nothing dubious, untoward or underhand about this technique. It is all fully approved by the UK government; it’s above board, it’s trusted, reliable, respected and reputable. It simply focusses around a framework, called the Framework of Regulated Qualifications (FRQ)—previously known as QCF/NQF, a concept of equivalency, progression from one academic level to the next in a modular approach, to build up a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) degree. If you are a member of the Affordable UK Uni Network (www.AffordableUKUni.com/join) you may qualify for instalments also. It’s simple and easy when you know how, and this book will explain the ‘how’, in a step-by-step approach.

What is good about this book Affordable UK University Education (www.AffordableUKUni.com), is that it explains the value of a UK degree; it gives background information on the Nigerian education system, and the UK education system. It will take you through the Framework of Regulated Qualifications (FRQ)—previously known as QCF/NQF, in detail and discuss in depth the concept of British Transnational Education. It explains fully, the Affordable UK Uni Framework (AUUF). I give four specific detailed examples of progression routes to a UK degree, from the perspective of if you want to be an entrepreneur, an information technology professional, a business, finance and management professional or a tourism and hospitality management professional. These four examples are furthermore broken down according to what qualification you currently hold, such as a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or WASSC (West African Senior Secondary School Certificate), which tend to be issued by the exam boards NECO or WAEC1, or an OND, or an HND/NCE, and the real-life step-by-step increments that you’d need to take to get to the point whereby you have a UK degree. There are 3 key points why this is such a unique and significant approach: Firstly, it’s quicker than gaining a Nigerian university education. Secondly, British education is highly prized in the employment market. Thirdly, it’s much cheaper than if you were to attempt to gain a British education actually in the UK.

Myself and my family have gained a British education; I am speaking from personal experience in writing this book and know that this is tried and tested and has successfully worked. I’m aware that many people wouldn’t have the time and effort that it has taken to discover this information, and perhaps wouldn’t know where to begin. This is why I have compiled these years of knowledge, experience and hard-work, in this easy to follow step-by-step self-help book, so that you have the most up-to-date information, and clear guidance as to exactly what you need to do. I wish a book like this had been available when I was first looking at educating myself and my family in the UK, it would have saved me a lot of time and money. This book is my gift to others to help as many people as possible to fulfil their ambitions, dreams and potential. My hope is that this book makes you aware of the possibilities, saves you money and time in discovering and researching this, and guides you through the simple process smoothly so that you can quickly be on your way to gaining a UK university degree.

    How to Use this Book

There are many ways you can read this book Affordable UK University Education (www.AffordableUKUni.com), dependent upon the time you have available and your desire for reading. It is worth pointing out that whilst we’ve tried very hard to explain all acronyms and abbreviations as we go along, there is a useful glossary at the end of the book, should you need to remind yourself what any of the abbreviations mean. There is also an FAQ section at the end of the book, and it really is worth familiarizing yourself with the questions and answers presented here, as they will certainly clear up many of the questions you have. If your question does not appear in the FAQs list, then please email: FAQ@AffordableUKUni.com.

    COVER-TO-COVER

You can, of course, read this book from cover to cover chronologically, and that will give you a full in-depth account of the University education systems in both Nigeria and the UK; the differences between them; knowledge about the wide variety of ways and options available to you, for how you can gain a UK education while based in Nigeria, and the steps required to do this. There are activities in the book, which you can complete as you read, so that the book becomes a practical workbook for you, providing all the answers for how to achieve your educational life goals.

    READ THE SUMMARY SECTIONS

If you’re wanting to get the gist of the book quickly, but don’t have the time to read every page in detail, each chapter has a Summary Section at the end of it, which summarizes the key sections of the chapter. Reading these summary sections will give you an indication of the chapter content and enable you to swiftly understand the key points of the book, and decide which chapters you may need to read in further detail.

READ THE RELEVANT CHAPTERS FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

It is best to read Chapters 6-10, plus the FAQs. If your question does not appear in the FAQs list, then please email: FAQ@AffordableUKUni.com. When reading Chapter 8, you only need to focus on the particular Career choice you are interested in out of the 4 options provided, these are of Entrepreneur; Business, Finance and Management Professional; Information Technology Professional; and Travel and Tourism Professional. Each career choice is broken down further, so you only need to read the section that corresponds to your current highest qualification, i.e. whether you’re a secondary school leaver, have an OND or HND/NCE.

It’s important to note that whatever your starting qualification, you’re able to work towards all of these professions. I’ve given four examples below, but in Chapter 8 each of these professions is covered in detail, regardless of whether you have a WASSC, IGCSE, SSSC, OND or HND/NCE:

If for example you have a WASSC (West African Senior School Certificate), IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) or SSSC (Senior Secondary School Certificate) and want to be an Entrepreneur, read Chapters 6-10 plus the FAQs, but you should focus on the Entrepreneur Career Choice section in Chapter 8, looking specifically at the Entrepreneur Case Study Example—[Secondary School Leaver].

If, on the other hand, you already have an OND (Ordinary National Diploma) and want to be a Business, Finance and Management Professional, read Chapters 6-10 plus the FAQs, but you should focus on the Business, Finance and Management Career Choice section in Chapter 8, looking specifically at the Business, Finance and Management Case Study Example—[OND Holder].

If, however, you already have an HND/NCE (Higher National Diploma/Nigerian Certificate of Education) and want to be an Information Technology Professional, read Chapters 6-10 plus the FAQs, but you should focus on the Information Technology Career Choice section in Chapter 8, looking specifically at the Information Technology Case Study Example—[HND/NCE Holder]. If you have a WASSC (West African Senior School Certificate) IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education or SSSC (Senior Secondary School Certificate) and want to be a Tourism and Hospitality Management Professional, read Chapters 6-10 plus the FAQs, but you should focus on the Tourism and Hospitality Management Career Choice section in Chapter 8, looking specifically at the Tourism and Hospitality Management Case Study Example—[Secondary School Leaver].

    Introduction

If for some unknown reason, UK university education suddenly became affordable to you (or your child), what would YOU do about it? I am pretty sure that most people would probably jump at the opportunity to get the best education in the world if they knew they could afford it somehow. This book will let you into a little-known secret that helps you realise that YOU CAN AFFORD to get a high-quality university degree from the UK. Interested? Then please join me on this exciting journey as I show you what exactly to do to get an affordable, modular UK university degree while staying right here in Nigeria for the most part!

Far more people sit and pass the JAMB exam than there are spaces available at a university in Nigeria, so many people are left without a university space because they’re so scarce. Even if you or your child is one of the lucky ones, a Nigerian degree just does not hold the same level of prestige as a British degree does. A UK degree is respected worldwide and held in high esteem by employers. We all want the best for our children; we want them to succeed and to go further in life than we have. It can be heart-wrenching when despite your best efforts of working every hour you have available, you just simply don’t have the money to send your children to Britain to get a first-class world-recognised degree. This would cost approximately one hundred and fifty thousand pounds (£150,000), and not many people have that kind of money available. Life can seem very unfair when you’re not able to provide the education you want your children to have, because you know that this will have a knock-on effect to the career they have and their future lifestyle, and even their chances of social mobility. However, there is now a solution to this problem. This Affordable UK University Education book (www.AffordableUKUni.com) puts forward in simple steps exactly how a UK degree can be affordable for you and your family, in pay-as-you-go instalments (for Affordable UK Uni Network members). You can join here: www.AffordableUKUni.com/join). This allows you and your children to gain a British degree and, therefore, experience career advancement, earn a high salary and live a good, happy and contented life.

    • In Chapter Six, using the Framework of Regulated Qualifications (FRQ)—previously known as the NQF and QCF, I explain for you in this book how you can take diploma level qualifications 3-6, via Portnall College UK, on a pay-as-you-go basis, to build towards a UK degree.

    • In Chapter Seven, I will share with you how you can stretch your budget further by paying in instalments.

    • When I show you the Affordability Index, soon you will know exactly the type of UK Education you can afford as it breaks it down clearly for you in terms of cost.

    • In Chapter Eight, I will show you how you will get your degree by only travelling to the UK for one year instead of 5, and this will help you make considerable savings.

Portnall College UK only has a certain number of openings available each semester for their blended learning students in Nigeria, and they simply cannot accept everyone who applies so they operate on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVED basis. If you are interested in applying for a place on one of their courses, it’s important to request an application form from: Forms@AffordableUKUni.com and once complete return it to: Applications@AffordableUKUni.com; this will ensure you are on the waiting list and in line for a slot at the next available opening. The sooner you do this, the greater the likelihood of getting a place on a course at Portnall College UK, and starting on your journey to an Affordable UK Uni degree.
