It was the online taster lecture from Birmingham University that sealed the deal. I wasn’t even attending for myself. My 18-year-old daughter and I were doing the COVID-necessitated virtual university tours last year, in advance of her choosing a place for this September. But the sample English Literature lecture was so inspiring, I was hooked.
I came straight out of the lecture and signed up for an English Literature degree with the Open University. I’d been toying with the idea for a while, but that Ulysses lecture and the thought of looming empty winter evenings in lockdown gave me the nudge I needed. And it seems I wasn’t alone.
