CHAPTER 1
The Enchanted Tree
Come on Lia, let’s go outside and play in the tree,
Mia said to her little sister Lia.
Okay, Mia. Let’s go!
The two girls hurried out the back door and down the hill to the prettiest pink blossoming tree they had ever seen. The branches twisted and twisted high into the sky and each branch was dotted with beautiful flowers. When the wind blew, the petals would fall softly to the ground covering the base of the tree with a lovely layer of blossoms.
Mia, where are you?
Lia asked. She looked up and Mia was sitting on one of the tree branches.
Up here Lia,
said Mia. Come on, get up here.
Okay,
said Lia, and she started to climb the tree.
Eight-year-old Mia was dressed in a flowy dark pink shirt and jean shorts. She had her straight brown hair brushed off to the side, and her bangs were just growing out, so they gently fell to either side of her face. She was a thin ballerina type girl, with large hazel eyes and delicate features. She always kept a little stuffed animal bunny named Fluffy in her backpack for fun.
Her six-year-old sister Lia wore a light pink shirt and cute skirt and sandals. Her long straight brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and her sparkling deep brown eyes always seemed to be smiling. Lia had a special little fox stuffed animal named Roxie that she carried with her in her backpack just for fun.
During the summers, Mia would sneak into her mom’s jewelry chest and find necklaces to bring to her backyard tree. She would decorate the branches with strands of golden necklaces, dripping with gems.
Lia would bring fancy pink scarves to the tree and arrange them in the branches to make a beautiful space for their toys. She also brought some of their favorite stuffed animals to the tree: a royal blue cat name Daisy, a soft brown dog named Peanut Butter, a green frog named Basil, and a yellow horse with long, brown hair named Pearl. Mia was into sewing and would create outfits for the stuffed animals that she and Lia designed themselves.
Currently, Peanut Butter was wearing a red shirt that the girls had made out of a pajama top. Daisy was dressed in a flowy grey velvet cape that was draped over her. The girls had fastened an ornate silver broach onto the front of the cape to secure it. The girls had also made a saddle for Pearl out of an old leather jacket they had found hanging in their closet. They didn’t bother to ask their mom if they could use it, since they knew their mom liked them to be creative. Instead, they quietly took down the jacket and cut shapes out of it to make a saddle for Pearl. They picked some small pink flowers from their yard and taped them to Pearl’s mane.
Basil, the light green frog, was dressed up as a baker. He had on a small white chef’s hat that Mia had cut out of white felt, and a medium sky-blue apron cut out of what they thought was an old cotton shirt from their mom’s closet. In fact, it was brand new, with tags hanging from it still, but Mia didn’t notice things like that. She just liked the color and knew right away that it would make a perfect apron for Basil.
While Mia was cutting, and sewing, and fastening her creations to their stuffed animals, Lia would be gathering supplies and helping to cut fabric. She loved Mia and wanted to do everything just like her. Besides being sisters, the two were great friends, and would play for hours in their backyard tree, especially during the summers.
One day, Mia decided to climb a bit further up into the tree. She climbed and climbed and climbed, and the tree branch just kept going. Lia, this branch just keeps going,
Mia yelled down to her little sister.
CHAPTER 2
The Clove
The tree branches twisted and twisted around and around, as Mia and Lia climbed further up. After a while, one large branch seemed to curve around and flatten out so the girls could walk on it. Gently, Mia placed one foot forward and then the next, taking small steps and being careful to balance herself on the branch. To her surprise, on either side of her, smaller branches covered with pink flowers grew up waist high and created a flower-covered wooden railing that she could hold onto for balance. She looked back at her sister.
Let’s see where this branch takes us.
Soon, they had arrived in a field of green grass with shimmering glitter swirling in the air. They ran through the glitter into this new land, then stopped abruptly. Before them were two large animals that looked just like the toys that they brought to the tree.
Lia and Mia spotted Pearl, the yellow horse with golden hair, and Peanut Butter, the sweet dog. This time though, the animals were real. Peanut Butter was a large dog and had wavy brown hair that looked like it had just been trimmed. His large brown eyes were friendly, his face kind, he had a long-rounded nose, and he wore a red shirt. His tongue was out, and he was happily wagging his tail and energetically running around. Pearl stood next to Peanut Butter. Pearl was strong, with a beautiful soft yellow coat and full thick golden-brown hair that looked like it had been brushed for hours. She had pink flowers delicately fastened on
