About this ebook

Peeping through the Millennium is a collection of more than fifty poems. The Poems deal with what people would experience in a millennium era. The poems tackle problems that people are facing in this era. New developments that have been solutions to outstanding issues such as issues of inclusive education and girls' education have been applauded.

In brief, the poems are discussing contemporary issue. Besides, some poems have been written for fun especially to the young children as one way of instilling in them a reading culture. Poems, such as The Baobab Tree and The Letter, just to mention a few, achieve that motive. Places of beauty have been sighted to promote tourism in this era. There are other poems that appreciate the political landscape.

The poems have been written in the manner that they should offer an excitement in reading due to vivid descriptions, apart from conveying the message. Anyone who has been to Africa will appreciate the contents formost of it reflects situations in Africa. To areas elsewhere in the world where climate change effects have played a major role in adjusting human living conditions to a lesser extent, hopefully the poems in the book are suitable to share and compare the experiences. For those not affected, well, opportunities are there through them to capture a glimpse of scenarios out there and have knowledge about them.

One may ask, why poems? From experience, many contemporary issues that affect our lives have been published in books in long prose written forms as such. Though very important, they create boredom and many readers do not finish reading such important messages, let alone interesting fictitious novels that are only for fun. To address the issue, the writer opted to convey the message to the prospective readers through poems which are shorter but carry all the necessary information. The poems are direct to the point.

Peeping through the Millennium - Ignatius Kameni

    The New Phenomenon

Like a dawn the ordeal started

It came into limelight through planting rains

Initially October fourth was earmarked for the activity

    Then shifted to October tenth

    The cause behind remained unknown

    Each time the trend occurred

The shift further lengthened to October thirtieth

The old who had seen many rains wondered and blamed the youths

The clergy blamed followers for blasphemy and idolatry

The blame game continued, still the new phenomenon remained unknown

As time went, the days shifted to months

November was earmarked for three years

And for December it was only two

Until when the January shift dominated forever

Witchdoctors ganged up for cleansing but to no avail

    ––––––––

Tension heightened when the hidden treasure

    became unpredictable

Rivers dried up before season end

    Crops withered begging for relief

    Something went amiss

Researchers were deployed to find the cause

Finally a revelation of the cause came out

A new phenomenon was long at last discovered

The ozone layer failed to function

    due to accumulated gasses

That the trees in less population failed to engulf

Which compelled the climate to change

    Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, I am told

People used to fish in wetlands close to home

    That's before nature became corrupted

Today they pay huge bus fares to fish far away

Once upon a time, I am told

People used to get firewood within their homestead

That's before nature lost its value

Today they walk miles and miles just for a log

Once upon a time, I am told

People used to hunt mice behind their houses for relish

That's when nature could interact with humans

Today they walk miles and miles

    without seeing a mouse hole

Once upon a time, I am told

    People used to harvest abundantly

    without applying fertilizers

That's when nature had a conducive environment

Today they hardly harvest despite the use of fertilizers

    Let me Know the Truth

Is it true that in the good old days

    Local farmers could harvest abundantly

    Without applying any fertilizers?

Is it true that in the good old days

    People could hunt wild
