    Preface

This book is an attempt to bring to light some of the challenges faced by those responsible for the creation of the Apostles’ Creed. It also hopes to bring to life those most involved and the reality of their dedication. At the heart of it all was the introduction of a new belief system based upon the teachings and life of Jesus. Several long-standing systems of belief, including Judaism, various forms of Gnosticism, and the polytheism of the Greeks had to be overcome. The opposition, obstacles, and oppression must have seemed insurmountable. It is noteworthy that it was the proliferation of heretical teachings and manuscripts, as well as divisions in the early church, that motivated the development of a creed. It could only have been the strength of and commitment to their beliefs in Jesus and Christianity that allowed the framers of the Apostles’ Creed to persevere.

The Apostles’ Creed (an affirmation of faith) is prayed in Christian services throughout the world. It contains the beliefs that form the basis of the Christian faith. The Nicene Creed emerged from the Nicene conclave in c. 325; it was amended in c. 381 to represent the core Christian beliefs. However, in about c. 400, Rufinis wrote a commentary on a pre-Nicene version of the rules of faith, thought to have been written by the Apostles. It is this version which closely approximates the modern-day Apostles’ Creed.

The power of one’s beliefs has been pointed out in the Bible: As a man thinks, so he is (Proverbs 23:7, KJV), and in literature. According to John Milton, author of Paradise Lost (1667), The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell.¹ Chapter 1 provides a brief summary of the science behind beliefs. For some readers, it may seem unnecessary and too academic. However, we have been given the freedom of choice by God. As in all other aspects of His universe, we should come to understand the processes involved so as to
