Introduction

And God said, Let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. Genesis 1: 3-5

Many cultures and those in the west know this phrase well.  It’s from the Book of Genesis of course.  Fewer people in America know the similar story as told by the Quran even though, worldwide; Muslims are not far behind Christianity in numbers, but largely outside the United States.  At this time, the number of Muslims is increasing while Christianity is on the decline.  I have tried to study the great religions of the world, you too, may want to study religion if you understood one of the greatest untold stories of creation.  The more I learn, the more I am amazed by the accuracy of texts written over 1,000 years ago.  The line that really started my interest in theology for the sake of science and fact is Surah Al-Anbya 21:30.

"Do not the unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were a closed-up mass, then We clove them asunder? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?"

After reading that line, I wanted to understand how somebody could have described and gone on the describe in great detail, cosmology and creation, if it was without divine intervention.

You should understand that I am a scientist, a researcher, always seeking out answers for what I do not yet understand.  It’s not surprising to any of my family members that I work for NASA.  I feel like it’s my calling to help advance human knowledge, and regardless of your religion or lack thereof, there is much we can learn from the ancient texts. That line hints at a knowledge of the big bang and creation as we understand it today, written a time without any possible method of knowing of the big bang.  Also, it is often scientists and those considered unbelievers that provide the evidence of creation.

Where was thou when I laid the foundations of the Earth?  Declare if though has understanding! from Yahweh to Job, is almost a challenge posed to humanity to uncover all of the secrets of the beginning of time.  I cannot wait for the James Webb Space Telescope to launch later this year and peer into the past.

I am also proud to say that I have read the Bible.  There are certainly some boring sections, such as the lineage elements.  There are also great lessons to be learned, stories of fortitude and triumph, the power of faith, and I do believe the world would be a better place if it focused on the teachings of Jesus, to simply love one another.  I have read many different religious texts, including the Quran, the Sutras, The Seven Valleys and The Four Valleys, and so on.  Yes, I am always reading something new.  In all, I have never really found any evidence that would necessarily make mainstream theological texts mutually exclusive with science.  Certainly I must be allowed some freedoms. I did find, on multiple occasions, writings that could not have been known using the technology of the time.

Consider the Earth being created in 6 days compared to how we understand creation. Again, from the Quran, one can easily infer the modern cosmology.  The text itself used an Arabic word for days (yom) also means periods or eons.  So maybe it was not six 24hr days as we know it today, but 6 time periods of indefinite length.  Even if we believe it meant 6 literal days, what is a day to God before the sun and Earth exists?  Today, a day is 24 hours as determined by how long it takes the Earth to rotate 360 degrees.  To be accurate, a day is 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59.9995162 seconds.
