Chapter One
The Candyman was practically vibrating with excitement. This would be the first big trip that he and Sandy Candy would be going on! They had planned it for nearly a full year. That was twelve whole months spent fretting over the planning stage of their adventure. They had made up maps. They had made up lists on paper plates. They had even found a very special history book to help in their journey!
Said lists were currently spread out over The Candyman’s kitchen table. Most of them had been scratched out with bright red glitter gel pen. A lot of them were duplicates. He didn’t want to risk not having enough supplies on him, or forgetting to bring something! Not to mention that The Candyman had to double check all of his lessons were put together or when they got home from the trip, to make sure that nothing was forgotten or skipped over.
The Candyman has very big plans for this field trip, you see. He had been planning it for almost a full year. While the journey itself would be a treasure hunt through the Real World, The Candyman knew that a lot would need to be done once they returned here, to the Land of Candy. He wanted to have tests ready, so his students could prove how much information they had absorbed during their trip.
It wasn’t often that they were able to go into the Real World, after all! It wasn’t that there were any rules against it. It was just a difficult thing to do, carving out enough time for a large group to make the journey. Not to mention that the Real World was very large! Even just counting the continents, there was so much land! There was Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Australia! And that was just in the present timeline! There were other vastly different continents in the past, too.
To make things more simple for his students, The Candyman had specified to the Special History Book that they were only going to explore parts of North America or Europe. He didn’t want to throw too much at his students today. Later on, he would take them to the other continents- he was very excited to show them how varied the Real World was. There were so many different cultures, so many different things to eat and places to see!
But he was an experienced teacher, and he knew that he couldn’t let his own excitement get in the way of his student’s ability to learn. They would focus on a smaller area for this treasure hunt, and simply go back to the Real World at a later date to explore the rest of it.
With that thought in mind, The Candyman went back to his lists. He had already gathered up his books. He had made plans for one of his neighbors to water his flowers. He had spent the last week getting lesson plans made up for when they returned home to the Land of Candy. It seemed that now, all they had to do was finish packing and then meet up at the Old Chocolate River.
The Candyman took great care in packing his luggage. He folded his shirts. He packed his good vest. He made sure that he had clean pants, a tooth brush, and his very favorite chocolate peppermint toothpaste. Of course, the luggage bag wasn’t the only thing that The Candyman was bringing. He had an outfit that had magical pockets, and he could store almost anything that he wanted inside of these pockets.
The Candyman took great care to pack away some other things that he thought might be vital to their journey: notebooks and pens and pencils, cream and brown sugar and peppermint chunks, band aids in case there were any accidents while they were out, a map of the United States. These were all just in case things. The Candyman doubted that they would get much use, but he found that it was better to be over prepared than under prepared.
Once he had all of his belongings packed, The Candyman picked up his Special History Book and stepped outside.
He lived on Gumball Road. The street was busy, even though it was still very early. The sky was hazy with morning light; shades of pink and orange and yellow. Ah,
said The Candyman. It’s a lovely day for an adventure!
And oh, he was going to have a very good adventure! The Candyman had been to the Real World before, but it was a very long time ago. The thought of getting to return to the Real World was an exciting one. It was just made that much better by the fact that he would be making this journey with his students. Company made everything better – especially when that company was eager to learn!
And in truth, The Candyman was excited to use the new book he had purchased. He had never bought a Special History Book before. It was very exciting to know that someone else would be making the plans. For the first time in a long time, The Candyman would be able to be just as surprised by things as his students were! As everyone knew, it was very hard to surprise a teacher!
The Candyman walked down the road. Each house that he passed was made from gingerbread. The frosting shingles still shimmered with a faint trace of dew. The fences along the fronts of each property were made from red licorice and brightly colored pick sticks. The path was cobbled stone with frosted edges. Everything in the Land of Candy was vibrant and pretty. There were no wars in their world and few disagreements. The people lived happily here, where everything was made from candy and other assorted sweets.
It made any walk a very enjoyable one. The air was always filled with the faint scent of fruit and sugar. Gumball Road had several lollipop trees on it, and he stopped to look at them on his way past and admire the smells. The early morning sunlight caught on the hardened sugar candy of the lollipops and turned the sidewalk into a mosaic of color. It was a little bit like walking past a stained glass window; the whole world seemed to be a little more bright!
When The Candyman was a child and full of energy, he used to love going to The Garden of the Lollies. He would really enjoy climbing to the very top of lollipop trees and picking the small, baby lollipops that grew there. He also loved looking deep inside to see the reflections inside. As he was now, however, The Candyman supposed he was far too old and large to climb up that high. Still, it was a pleasant memory, and not one that he was keen on letting go any time soon.
Can’t stand and look around forever,
said The Candyman, to himself. He gave the trunk of the lollipop tree a pat, gave the candy one last sniff, and then started walking again. Over his shoulder he saw a puff come from the ground near that tree. Up sprouted a cotton candy fluffy bush in rainbow colors. When in East Bluerock you could time the cotton candy puffs coming up from the ground. Some puffed up so high they seemed to touch the clouds before settling back down.
The Candyman’s shoes made a pleasant clack-clack with each step that he took. Ah, I love mornings!
It was his favorite time of the day! Most people wouldn’t think that, however. The Candyman was up very early every day, but his time was usually spent in his study, working on his students papers and lesson plans. The Candyman found that he worked best in the morning. The later in the day it became, the harder it was for him to focus on the task at hand.
One of his neighbors, Minty Gumdrop, was also out. Minty waved a large gloved hand at him. Candyman! I never see you out this early!
"I’m going to
