Introduction
They’ll tell you not to believe in such things; l am not sure you shouldn’t. I mean, what does anyone really know about anything anyway?
Many years ago, l was given this story by a friendly person with long black beautiful hair and eyes that were blue and full of life. Well, l had to listen. She was so stunning, good looking. She told me she was a Witch.
‘Listen,’ I said. ‘Been around the world and not certain about you being a Witch, but your cat, is that real?’ I asked.
She smiled gently and told me, ‘Yes. He and l have been together so long. He is called Magnificent. Strange name for a cat, don’t you think?’ she asked, but never let me reply.
‘Didn’t name him. Think he chose that all by himself, and I certainly didn’t choose him. Magnificent turned up one evening at about midnight on a cold night. Came in through an open window, went straight to the open fire and began sleeping.’
‘Anyway, that’s his name,’ she said. ‘He also speaks, but mainly sleeps and snores. His snoring is so loud it sounds like a massive storm with rumbles of thunder.’
I thought she said that the cat speaks!! Must be mistaken, surely. Everyone knows cats don’t speak.
Anyway, Val continued with her story.
‘Let me introduce myself; you must think me very rude for not having done so already. My name is Val. I am not telling you how old l am, and, young man, it’s rude to ask.’
‘Inventing and spells and, of course, selling broomsticks are my life’s passions -broomsticks for flying purposes, you understand, not for cleaning floors. No, that would never do.’
‘Did you say flying?’ I asked, ‘I mean, you just said flying! I definitely heard flying…’
‘Well, my dear, how else would you expect a Witch to fly? But it wasn’t always this way. This is the whole story. Now listen,’ Val said.
