In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States.
Mrs. Roosevelt inspected their new house
from basement to attic.
She opened doors and windows.
She cleaned floors, closets, and cabinets.
She made a place for each person and every pet.
One animal had not been invited — a big Rat. Annie O’Rourke, the cook, saw it first. She jumped on a stool and yelled, There’s a rat in the kitchen!
Archie heard her shout. First, he checked on Jonathan, who was snoozing in his pocket.
Archie told Annie that the President had work to do.
