Windows 10 - Sam Griffin
Introduction
Windows 10 is the latest operating system offered by Microsoft. It was designed and developed for personal computers, embedded devices, tablets, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Windows 10 was launched in July 2015 as a successor to Windows 8. Ever since the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has continuously made clarifications about how they will keep upgrading Windows 10 perpetually over introducing a new Windows operating system altogether.
Anyone with a Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system on their machine can upgrade seamlessly to Windows 10 without having to format their existing file system or deleting existing data. The upgrade is as simple as running the Windows 10 installer that transfers all settings and data from the existing Windows 7 or Windows 8 system onto the new Windows 10 system. The installer also gives you the option to customize your upgrade by selecting what you want to keep and what you want to erase during the installation. Users can wait for an automatic upgrade prompt in their current Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating systems, or they can manually download the Windows Update Assistant from Microsoft’s website to upgrade their Windows system proactively.
There is also a variant of Windows 10 known as Windows 10 Mobile that is an operating system developed by Microsoft for smartphones.
We will learn about all that and more throughout the following chapters. Thank you for choosing this book, I hope you find it to be helpful.
Chapter One: About Windows 10
Windows 10 brings back the tiled start menu that was introduced in Windows 8 and was a major upgrade from the Windows 7 start menu. For tablet users or personal computers with touch screens, users can experience the touch-focused start menu as well, which can be activated separately. Users can alternate between a touchscreen and keyboard on devices that support the switch using Microsoft Continuum. Continuum automatically detects the type of device in use and switches the interface to match the device.
Windows 10 offers an integrated search that can be used to search the local locations of the system as well as the Internet parallely.
Internet Explorer has been replaced by Microsoft Edge in Windows 10, which takes over the role of the primary web browser. Edge has evolved as a chromium-based browser in 2020 to work at par with web browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Edge offers integrated tools such as Web Notes and Reading Views. Users can use Web Notes to mark up their favorite websites, whereas Reading Views allows users to view most websites without the ads on them. The Edge browser has inbuilt integration with Cortana, the digital assistant by Microsoft.
Cortana’s search is integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine, and allows search in the form of both text and voice. Cortana saves user preferences such as their location, browsing history, search history, applications, and services used within the system, to offer a customized operating system experience to the user. Cortana can be disabled at any point in time if not needed.
Security in Windows 10
Windows 10 offers integrated multi-factor authentication support through technologies such as smartcards and tokens. With Windows Hello, Microsoft also introduced biometric authentication for users through fingerprint scan, facial recognition, and iris scan.
The Windows 10 operating system also offers virtualization-based tools for security such as Windows Defender Device Guard, Isolated User Mode, and Windows Defender Credential Guard. These security features safeguard data, user credentials, and processes, so that the risk of damage from any attack can be minimized.
The BitLocker encryption tool has also evolved with Windows 10, and it safeguards any data that is in motion between devices via email, storage hardware, and cloud services.
Hardware Requirements for Windows 10
