Enomwoyi Damali

I'm Enomwoyi, which means 'she has grace and charm'! I hope I live up to this!I was born in Trinidad, beautiful island in the Caribbean, which is twinned with Tobago. I've lived most of my life in the UK, but make no mistake, I'm so proud to be Trini to the bone! My favourite things about Trinidad? The food (channa roti, doubles and poulorie are my favourites!), the flowers (hibiscus and bougainvillea in every colour you can imagine!) the music (calypso and soca), and of course the predictable hot sunshine!I think I was born with a pen and a book in my hand because I've loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember! When I was a little girl, I preferred reading and writing to playing with dolls! Might sound boring but I loved it! I still have a story that I wrote when I was about five (laminated to protect it as it's over 50 years old! Very short but so sweet about a little girl (with a purple face!) playing in the garden with her Daddy, while her Mummy made the dinner!I've spent over 30 years working as an Educational Psychologist (EP) in London (inspired by meeting a Black EP when I was 9 years old, and thinking, "I want to do that!"). I've worked with 100s of children and young people in that time and I am just as motivated now as I was at the beginning in helping them to develop into the best that they can be, whatever skills and talents they might have.I returned to my love of writing when I went to a book launch about 10 years ago and decided I wanted to have a go. Since then I have written 18 stories based on the main character of Nzingha, a 9 year old of Trinidadian heritage (of course!), her diverse group of friends in Amber Class, and their wonderful teacher, Mrs Adisa. My goal is to help children think about and practice the personal development skills and qualities needed to live life fully and to treat each other with love and respect. As well as writing my Nzingha book series, I have written several blogs which are published on the Alzheimer's Society website. My 87 year old mother, diagnosed with Alzheimer's 8 years ago, lives in our family home and I found that writing about my experience of looking after her as her condition changed overtime proved to be a really good coping mechanism for me, and, judging by the responses to the blogs, have been helpful to other people in similar situations. However, I have not left Nzingha out, as I have written a book called Nzingha and Understanding Alzheimer's!I enjoy lots of other things when I'm not writing.... Zumba, gardening, travelling, playing in a steel band, vegan cooking and baking, sound healing and meditation. Because I'm so busy, I do love a good night's sleep too!
