WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE

    AGE OF THE POP ASCENSION

    JUST WHOSE SOUND WAS IT

    THE CHOSEN FIGURE

MAKES NO DIFFERENCE WHO YOU ARE

    EASE ON DOWN THAT ROAD

    NO LONGER GOING MY WAY

    THE POINT OF NO RETURN

    BUT THEY TOLD ME

IT COSTS TOO MUCH TO HAVE TO PLAY THIS GAME

    I WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED

    ALL ABANDONED IN MY FAME

WHAT HAS BECOME OF MY LIFE

    YOU HAVEN’T SEEN NOTHING YET

    GOTTA REALLY BURN THIS ROAD

    DO YOU REMEMBER

    REACHING A CRESCENDO

FADING IN THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE

    WE FOUND OUR SCAPEGOAT

    LEAVE US ALONE

NONE GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS

AND THEY SAID IT DIDN’T MATTER

WAS IT ALL REALLY WORTH IT

    A WORLD WITH NO HATERS

    THE MESSAGE IN THE MUSIC

    GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

    FOR YOU AND FOR ME

    FOREWORD

This book is written not to denigrate, but to bring forth a degree of understanding.

The world needs to read the truth about what a system of thought did in turning a person who reached his life potential into a human being denied the opportunity to fulfill his promise and what could have been.

In presenting the cause of what happened while identifying its root, the author hopes this story can serve as a contributor in rebuilding our culture and our music.

    INTRODUCTION

What’s the saying? That’s the way it goes down huh?

Watching from afar, so many things have been revealed and the information I’ve learned has done nothing but support the obvious, substantiate proper view, and validate why I feel the way I do about this particular situation.

It’s important to note what really happened to the state of music as a whole and the factors contributing to the demise of its leading presence; factors that can be traced back some fifty years as the Pop music sphere began to take precedence; giving birth to a season of peril that has ruled the recording industry for the past quarter century.

Much was given and much was taken away.

WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE

I’ll never forget that fateful day when music started to lose its way. Sitting there while taken back, watching the wheels fall right off track.

The essence driven from its core, what did the future have in store? An image speaking loud and clear, a cloud shook up the atmosphere.

What was I supposed to do; no way could this be coming true. I must admit I took it hard, I saw this changing of the guard.

Frozen there and standing still, the tide was sure to pose its will. Better yet, it broke my stride; there surely was no place to hide.

Hostile winds knocking at the door, what did the future have in store? Leaving strains of residue, emotions started pouring through.

What I once looked forward to was left behind in distant view. The way the gift has been exploited has left a void that’s truly voided.

Looking back in retrospect, now I see the full effect. A front that lived beyond the norm, it all produced the perfect storm.

Built up from its many traces; a road that filled those empty spaces. It always meant allot to me, something I thought would always be.

Once the picture bent its frame, going by a different name, the course would never stay the same. Touching souls in mighty ways no longer seems to be the case these days.

For those who left the proper plane, was all their efforts done in vain? What kind of message does it sends, on what was paying dividends, and use to back the latest trends?

A measure of the total cost, a promise that would soon be lost. The very fabric has been shaken; the people have been surely taken. Waking from this aftermath, I chose to seek the blazon path.

Anything to stop the rain, another loss is another gain. Learning from the lessons past, I hope to make this moment last.

The question that I beg to pose; for anyone who truly knows?

From every coast on every shore, where have I heard this song before?

    AGE OF THE POP ASCENSION

1987 should go down as the year musical entertainment began to decline. It’s as if the voices of power shaping the framework put everything in motion to change the recording industry forever, and ultimately changed it for the worse; or I should say, because of negative influence, everything began to decline simultaneously from the same point of reference.

Regarding black music, a new forthcoming movement virtually set out to eradicate true cultural standing, separating premier black talents representing singers, performers, musicians, and dancers from its people; relationships that anchored a wealth of creative output before giving way to what should be identified and described as The Pop Ascension.

Within the current landscape, we have black people making music, but we no longer have real black music. There’s a difference. Real black music was built from The Spirituals born out of the struggle; creating the full gamut of musical genres we have enjoyed throughout the 20th century (ragtime, gospel, blues, jazz, soul, rap, and country). The Real Ascension cultivated the greatest musical.

How were these spirituals created? They were created as a channel for giving a voice to the voiceless; giving those surviving within the struggle a rare opportunity to speak out with no threat of consequence; a freedom representing itself as a vital contributor in shaping culture. Culture became essential to survive in a society that’s built on racial animosity and division.

Through means of juxtaposition, in order for America to thrive and function beyond the series of contradictions it has fostered, it has to incorporate culture; but does so in a manner that exploits ideas and expressions generated by a distinctive culture.

When a major representative from that culture presents those virtues in the most definitive way, that person finds himself/herself drawn out from the community.

The community suffers from the void left as a result of the separation; creating a great deal of hostility along the way. The representative suffers too, even more so than the community because the representative or the most influential voice drawn out becomes isolated from any form of human interaction essential to maintain proper perspective.

Making music has suffered under the veil of the Pop Ascension, or what remains of it. This is why the music doesn’t sound as exceptional compared to the voices of yesterday. The Pop Ascension acted on a false sense whereas the Real Ascension wrote a book of its own title.

Eventually, record executives pushed all luminaries to the background and replaced them with acts they felt could generate more sales; thus focusing on image. To make the presentation plausible, to carry out the vision, they mimicked authenticity of years past.

But ironically, many of those same acts began turning back to the future out of necessity for the environment they worked in professionally hindered them from creating something fresh, something authentic.

That’s why our musical content has become more aggressive and cynical over the course of time.

Something counterproductive was taking place, but we couldn’t identify the problem or what was causing the problem. What was the problem? The most influential musical force was separated from his people while culture has been assimilated into the mainstream allowing others to capitalize from it. So now, our representatives in the music field lack true direction.

As the Pop Ascension gained momentum, the spirituals, especially R&B became a category (mid 80’s), a demographic (late 80’s), a formula (early 90’s), a derivative (mid 90’s), a sub-culture (neo-soul in the late 90’s), giving way to anything or anyone who would incorporate it into their existence (the beginning of new millennium), before falling off into distant view.

Culture deriving from the spirituals produced, promoted, and sustained
