Foreword
2020 has delivered a bouquet of emotions at our doorstep. A bouquet that was unexpected and for which we were all unprepared! These emotions have bewildered us, some of them have confused and scared us; however, some others have brought us closer. In these unprecedented times, while the world is battling health, financial, and emotional struggles, there is one thing that is keeping the world from falling apart and that is HOPE. Hope for a better future, hope for a better world, and hope for a better life!
Garden of Hope is a book with 18 stories that promise to inspire love, hope, and joy in your life.
Challenging times are not limited to a pandemic. We all face adversities in different phases of our lives, many times. l believe that we all need a little ray of hope when the going gets tough and Garden of Hope is the best book you can read to inspire you and lead you through tough times.
I started life being orphaned in a foreign country that I have now made my home. I was then adopted but my mother passed away suddenly when I was 16 and my adopted father passed away suffering through cancer. Alone again in this world, I threw myself into work and study. I understood very quickly that life wasn’t about me but how I made others feel. Focusing on where I could help, allowed me to provide hope for others and hope for a better future.
I have had the privilege to travel around the world to train and share messages to inspire others to be conscious leaders, unlock their value and share HOPE.
I believe that business success and leading a life worth living, rests on the ability to build real connections, to be conscious of your domino effect, and be trustworthy in life. Having owned and operated several highly successful training companies and been recognised both nationally and internationally as a leader, I understand that caring for others and providing hope makes a big difference in this world.
In the last financial crises, we lost over a million dollars and were left with a large debt. Within a year I started my first training company and turned our finances and lives around by seeing what is possible and having hope for a better future.
Garden of Hope is a compilation of work of 18 authors from different parts of the world, all of whom I know personally. They are influencers and authority in their area of work. Their stories have inspired me, and I believe they will inspire you too. These authors are on a mission to change lives and bring light to the world. They have shared their most heartfelt thoughts and learnings with the deliberate intention of helping people across the globe.
Don’t let hardships stop you from living the life of your dreams. Get up, dust yourself off, and march ahead. Create a life that you always wanted to live. Challenging times can bring out the best or the worst in you. Choose the best version of you and spread the light to others as well.
Garden of Hope will make you believe in yourself, inspire more hope, and create more joy in your life. When you choose to consciously lead for positive outcomes and sprinkle hope to others, anything is possible!

Glide to Soar: Secrets to Success Learnt Falling from the Sky
By Shane Quinnell
It is a hot, dry day in remote South Africa.
I sit on a seat made of thin nylon. Strings millimetres thick connect me to a parachute-like wing. The wing’s flimsy material suspends me a thousand meters above the ground and two hundred meters above a rugged mountain range.
The sun scorches my face. As I speed through the air, the wind cools me down.
I am completely fascinated by the earth curving away from me. I give no conscious thought to the fact one wrong move could mean death. I feel completely content and alive. I have flown hundreds of kilometres this way.
I fly my paraglider through slowly sinking air. I am gliding, using a set of skills and techniques to keep myself airborne. I am waiting and feeling for a thermal that will lift me toward the base of the clouds above me. Thermals are pockets of rising hot air and the source of most of the clouds you see on a blue sunny day. Most people don’t know they exist, but to us paraglider pilots they are miraculous invisible elevators. They are our tickets to the sky.
Finding a thermal while paragliding can sometimes feel like a slight tug on my paraglider, sometimes as faint as a fish nibbling on a fishing line, other times like Muhammed Ali’s fist to the face. Either way when I feel a thermal, I know it is time to fly!
I feel the front of my wing lift. A thermal! I pull on my steering lines to spiral into the centre of the thermal. Immediately I feel myself being pulled to the clouds, at times gaining ten meters every second.
After thermalling, the magic happens. I am literally touching the clouds. The air is cool. There is no sound but the wind. I feel like I can see and sense the whole world.
Those moments are the closest I have ever come to what we are all searching for: complete fulfilment.
I feel ultimately free, and yet like I belong completely. It feels like true success. It feels like my whole being is soaring.
I believe everyone deserves to experience this sensation. I believe everyone can soar.
This story is about how in life, just like in paragliding, we can each Glide to Soar.
This is my story.
***
Having touched the clouds, I am once again a few hundred meters above the mountain. I am flying calmly in a straight line. Again, I am mesmerised by the world curving away from me.
CRACK! My paraglider collapses violently. I start falling from the sky.
I feel my stomach fly through my mouth as I speed toward the mountain below me.
Adrenaline explodes through my body. I am thrown into a game of life and death.
I react to try and catch my wing and save myself. My wing snaps. It half reopens but is knotted. Not able to fly properly, it swings me into a death spiral.
I look down to throw my emergency parachute. The only power lines on the entire fifty-kilometre mountain range are directly beneath me.
Fear grips my chest. If I throw my parachute chute I risk being fried. If I don’t, I’m dead.
I pull the chute. It jerks me violently. I slow momentarily.
A few seconds go by. I am now only ten meters from the side of the mountain.
WHOOSH.
Another gust of wind hits me. It slings me 180 degrees, straight at the mountain. I lift my legs to brace for impact.
SMASH!!!
Both my ankles crush. My back nearly snaps in half. My limp body somersaults into the vegetation.
The only two witnesses are sure I am dead. I am sure I am dead.
Blackness swamps me.
***
I wake between two giant rocks.
Pain explodes from my back, my feet, my legs. Fear hits me. Will I live? Will I walk?
I realise these could be my last minutes. A sense of dread engulfs me. I’m not completely fulfilled. I haven’t found what I am looking for in my life. I need more time!
My senses want to explode with overload. Not with pain. Discomfort. Incredible, near insanity provoking discomfort. It feels like my body is twisted in knots and stretched apart at the same time.
Every instinct screams, MOVE!
. It’s as though my body knows it’s broken and just wants to put itself back together. Realising my back is probably broken I focus everything on stopping myself moving. I bite my hands, pinch my face, even hit my head on rocks.
The hour it takes for the first person to arrive is the longest of my life.
***
Hours later, I’m in the hospital. After x-rays that feel like a combination of every ancient torture technique known to man, I find myself in a dark room.
Red lights, flashing, incessant beeping, and groans of dying people fill my world.
A shadowy figure, my doctor, explains that I have crushed both legs, smashed countless bones and badly broken my back. I don’t understand everything through the fog of morphine, but I remember these words perfectly: Shane, we don’t know if you are going to walk again.
This can’t be happening; I think as I pass out.
***
Two weeks later, clarity dawns.
I’m still in a hospital bed. I can’t move. I need suppositories to poo all over myself. It feels like lava flows in my veins.
Negative thoughts grow.
You’re going to be here a long time.
You won’t walk for months.
Why me?!
I feel the black hole of hopelessness pulling me in. We have all had these moments where we feel like we are sliding into the deep dark abyss of desperation. I feel the same fear return.
I look out of the window.
STOP!
I scream in my head.
I realise I’m on the edge of a psychological cliff and about to fall.
In that moment of despair, I recall the agonising hour spent lying between those two rocks on what could have been my death bed. I remember that all I wanted was another shot to reach fulfilment. A chance to live my dreams.
I realise regardless of how hard I fight; I will still be in the hospital for a long time. Flying was my choice, it was incredible, I do not regret it. I realise I have a choice, hopelessness or a second chance.
I choose to accept the pain. I choose to find a purpose to recover. I choose my biggest dream, an overland expedition to climb Africa’s Biggest Mountains. I decided to focus on soaring again.
Realising I had a choice, changed my life. Making the choice to focus not on my problems but the solutions, my future, was the single, most powerful decision of my life. It still is.
Later that week my girlfriend Tarryn, who is now my wife, and I tacked an old map of Africa to the wall.
***
In the three years following my accident, my now-wife Tarryn and I built and lived our dream.
Following my choice to recover, exploring Africa with Tarryn became my purpose, my obsession. With Tarryn at my side and our dream to focus on, I stopped being concerned with my injuries and started imagining the possibilities if I could just recover. At the time I was still in a hospital bed and unable to move. There was a
