    Introduction

While on a mission in the Cayman Islands, the Lord gave me the title of this book. My first reaction to His inspiration was, Oh no, not another Christian book! It has seemed to become big business now in ministry, to write yet another book; to sell and to promote one’s own ideology. However, the more the Lord fed me the thoughts for the content of this handbook, the more excitement mounted in my spirit to share it.

The focus of this manual is to be a guide for evangelism and to direct true believers back to the book of Acts as an example of how God wants us to reach the people of the world for Christ. This publication is designed to be an aid to laborers who are willing to go out into the fields of this world to bring in the great harvest of souls that are waiting to be gathered in these last days. The objective of this writing is to enlighten the reader of the vast work that exists outside of the walls of the traditional church congregation.

The meeting place where believers come together to worship God, is not the true definition of the church. The meeting place is just a building (church house, temple or cathedral) dedicated for that purpose. Jesus informs Peter in Matthew 16:15-18 (KJV), after quizzing him on his understanding of the true person of Christ, But whom say ye that I am? Peter responds correctly by emphatically stating, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus then highly commends him and tells him, "…upon this rock (or solid truth of God’s Word) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." The true church is built upon the foundation of the Word of God and Jesus Christ Himself is the CEO or the Chief Cornerstone (Ref. Ephesians 2:20-22). This is all spiritual – not natural. This is further validated by the statement Jesus made to the disciples in Matthew 24:2 (KJV), when they were taking Him on a tour and showing Him the beautiful architect of the temple where people assembled to worship. Jesus was not impressed at all! He told them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. That is not what He came to set up. That is what He came to tear down – organized religions that didn’t offer any hope of salvation. His statement in no way discounted the gathering of believers, but rather clarified to them the true constitution of the church and its mission after leaving their assemblies.

Evangelism is acting upon what Jesus charged his followers to do; in Mark 16:15 (KJV). Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. This is the great commission, to proclaim the gospel message that Jesus Saves to the unsaved; to convert them from darkness and the penalty of sin, to the marvelous new life in Christ Jesus.

This is in no way a condemnation of the local church congregation, but rather a differentiation of what evangelism is. It is totally different from helps and governments in the assembly of believers. It is building the kingdom of heaven here on earth by adding souls to the church. We go out into the vast fields of the world to reach people for Christ and invite them into local assemblies so they can be fed and nurtured by a Pastor. The evangelist and missionaries should work hand-in-hand with the Pastor to build the church and encourage it’s growth. Without evangelism or outreach, the church would die out. That is why it is important for every church congregation to have an Evangelistic Program. We need to mobilize the church. We are not all called to be evangelists, but we are all charged to be a witness for Christ in some way. Everybody can reach somebody!

I have attempted to incorporate some of my own evangelistic experiences in Home and Foreign missions to illustrate how God takes ordinary, every-day people and uses them to propagate His kingdom. This is my humble attempt to encourage you to understand that it is important to see yourself as the one person who God can use to make a difference in steering souls from hell and turning them to Christ. It is not always the renowned personalities that get the job done, but the humble servants who just obey God. How many Wycliffe Bible translators do you see on television? These laborers spend months and years with people in remote parts of the world to understand their culture and language so they can translate the Word of God for them in their own language. Yet their work is unheralded because it is not done for man’s glory, but for God’s glory. It has no selfish motivation. It is serving and sacrificial. That has got to be our sole motivation if we want to please God – that it is for His glory! Look at The Gideons Organization that provide free Bibles to people all around the world; you can even go into most hotels and motels and find them in each room. Volunteers also freely distribute these Bibles to prisoners across the nation. What a great ministry that quietly shares God’s love. There is so much we can do!

This manual may be used for evangelism workshops in eight-week sessions (two hours each) or whatever time frame works for your situation and environment. It may also provide personal motivation for individuals who love to tell people about Jesus and want to do more of it.

The manual is divided up into 8 sections:

    I. Preparing Yourself

    II.The Spirit-Filled Life

III. Hearing the Voice of God

IV. Get Excited - Selecting the Focus Area

    V. Tools of the Trade

    VI. Going Fishing for Souls

    VII. Dealing with Opposition

    VIII. Follow-up and Review

In addition, a field trip exercise will be outlined in Section IV to guide the users through planning an outreach.

May you read this prayerfully and understand that God has unlimited ways of leading us and sending us forth into His vineyards to work. Hopefully, you will be encouraged to be all that you can be in God’s service.
