Chapter One

Harry Rosen, billionaire bitcoin investor and author, surveyed his audience in the ballroom of the Park Plaza Hotel. He’d been asked by his Toronto Stock Exchange investor friends to come to the city to entice would-be investors into exploring how to get rich by investing in bitcoin.

You’re the perfect choice, Harry, they’d urged. You’re a self-proclaimed bitcoin billionaire. You’re knowledgeable and you’re a convincing speaker.

Tall, dark, and handsome, Harry was an imposing figure in his thousand dollar custom tailored suit. Even though he was in good shape for his late fifties, he hardly stuck out in this crowd of well-dressed business men.

"Bitcoin investment is often linked historically to shady dealings like drug trafficking, money laundering, and the dark web, Harry began. Some of you may have difficulty imagining a positive association with bitcoin, and I thought the same thing when first confronted with the possibility of investing. Only a few years ago, it was hard to imagine that this cryptocurrency would ever have any legitimacy. But, he shrugged good naturedly, here we are today. Honest businessmen—and women, Harry paused to smile and acknowledge the three women in the audience, it’s a fact, he went on. Data doesn’t like bitcoins. Nevertheless, their price has risen more than 900% in the past year alone." Harry stopped to flash the next slide on his PowerPoint presentation.

Bitcoin investment earned its shady reputation in the beginning, he admitted. It was indeed first used to sell illegal goods on the online black market. Silk Road was once the defining marketplace of the cryptocurrency. But that’s just a part of bitcoin’s growth history, he pointed out as he flipped the next slide.

Bitcoin has now earned its legitimacy as legal investors give it a different reputation. Harry flashed the next slide and continued. Earlier this year, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the world’s largest futures exchange, announced it would offer bitcoin futures. Why? he asked the audience. Because of a demand from its clients. He paused again, giving his audience a chance to absorb this information. If I were you, Harry said, I’d take this trend as a very good sign.

Someone in the audience raised his hand, and Harry nodded his head at the man, allowing him to speak. Why do you see it as a good sign? asked the young businessman in a charcoal suit. His wireframe glasses made him look smart and mature—even if he wasn’t.

Good question, remarked Harry, warming to his topic. The introduction of futures would in theory increase the number of investors from the financial sector. The result would be an increase in the market’s liquidity and stability.

You’re right, commented another young investor in a navy blazer and a university tie. "The Nasdaq and Cantor Fitzgerald are also reportedly planning their own bitcoin futures exchanges."

A murmur went through the crowd at this news.

If you’d decided to go onto a bitcoin exchange, Harry pointed out, flipping the next slide, you could have purchased, say, 100 dollars worth of bitcoin a year ago. Today, he said, pointing his laser pointer at the slide, that hundred bucks of bitcoin would be worth over 1300 dollars in today’s prices.

The excited buzz from the audience increased.
