About the Author

Dedication

This book is dedicated to two people whom I love and want to honor: my husband, Albert Diedrich, and my ghostwriter/editor, Colleen Fox.

Colleen has known me for 20 years. She knows me so well that she can take anything I write in draft form and finesse it with my voice. She reads all the material not only once or twice, but as many times as necessary, to be certain that everything is exactly what I want to have it say. She has the patience to check, correct, re-write, and re-check until she knows intuitively that everything is just the way it should be.

Albert, my husband, has never read even one of my six books because he doesn’t have to read what I write to believe in me, and because he’s listened to me tell so many of my stories over the years. He was the first one to understand me when I was just 14 years old, more than 50 years ago, and he’s trusted me ever since.

He wakes me up with a kiss every morning, makes my breakfast, and then takes me for a walk with our dogs so he can be sure I get my exercise for the day. He knows when I get back that I’ll go to my cave (my office) where I’ll remain for the rest of the day, taking care of others. He understands that this is my life’s mission, and he doesn’t complain about my long hours, phone calls on weekends and holidays, and shortened vacations.

Although Albert and Colleen are totally unrelated, they do have something special in common. They are both the wind beneath my wings. I couldn’t have written this book without either of them. So I want to thank both of them from the bottom of my heart because they each allowed me to be me, to soar, and to fly without worries.

I also know that one of them will never read this dedication, but that’s OK, because he’ll be taking care of me instead!

Love to both of you, and a huge Thank You!

Introduction

Contrary to what most people think, animals DO have their own language, and they’ve been trying to communicate with us since the beginning of time.

Many people laugh at the idea that animals have feelings, needs, and wishes, or that they can express empathy and love, or that they can purposefully decide the where, when, and how of their actions. But animals most definitely do, and they can often tell us very clearly what’s on their minds.

How do they do it?

Animals are able to send pictures to each other, and to humans, but in today’s busy society, our minds are usually too preoccupied to be able to understand the subtleties of picture communication.

Instead, we go about our lives wishing we could communicate with our pets, when in fact, they’ve been busily trying to communicate with us ever since they came to live with us. We just don’t remember how to receive the information they’re sending.

When our human ancestors communicated with each other mainly by grunting and pointing, they, too, were able to communicate, even over long distances, by sending and receiving information in the form of pictures. These images were used to convey something important they wanted to say.

Picture language, or picture telepathy as I’ve named it, was mainly used as a survival tool. Humans and animals would send pictures of where the food and water supplies were, and where the best grazing areas were when they needed to move the herd from one place to another. They could also warn each other about approaching storms or other dangers.

All species were able to communicate very effectively with each other using pictures this way.

Nowadays, though, picture language is all but forgotten by humans, except maybe by children. Their minds are so uncluttered that they easily receive the pictures animals are always sending, and they understand the secrets the animals want to share. This is what happened with me. Because I was born remembering, it was easy for me to communicate with animals from an early age.

In the beginning when I was very young, I had many, many doubts because no one believed me. Although a healthy amount of skepticism is normal . . . and even I was very skeptical for awhile . . . when I eventually learned to believe in myself, I was able to overcome the negativity and disbeliefs of others.

Once I understood the effectiveness of this gift, I was then able to become the bridge or translator for your pets, and that’s been my passion for my entire life, as well as my professional career for the past 30+ years.

But . . . everyone is born with this telepathic gift. We just have to learn how to use it. It was, after all, the first language of humans before humans ever developed speech, and even though picture language has been forgotten for centuries, it does still exist.

Since I wrote my first five books, there’ve been so many more pets . . . so many more surprises . . . so many new lessons learned . . . and so much love . . . that many of my clients have asked me to share even more stories in yet another book.

In this, my sixth book, Your Pet Called . . . you’re going to find stories that will make you smile, touch your heart, and maybe even heal your spirit.

This book is arranged so you can easily read it from beginning to end, or you can skip around by choosing whatever chapter or story title is of particular interest to you.

If this is the first of my books that you’re reading, you’ll also probably want to know much more about how I do what I do. You may also discover that you can do it, too. You can learn all about this in detail in Chapter 18.

Although I refer to these accounts as stories, it’s important to remember that they’re all true. Each of the pets, their names, and their pictures are most definitely real.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading each of these delightful stories as much as I’ve enjoyed preparing them for you!

Prologue

Things That Are Helpful to Know About Pets in Spirit

Where Do Animals Go When They Die?

When my clients request consultations, about half the time they want me to communicate with their pets who are dying, or who have already made their transitions into Spirit.

If a beloved pet has passed on, there are certain questions almost everyone wants answers to . . . Where are you? Are you well? Are you happy? Do you have any pain?

Based on thousands of replies, the simple answer is . . . pets who have passed on say they’re in the light, or surrounded by light, or they’re now beings of light.

Each of them might describe their state of being just a little bit differently, but there’s always an all encompassing light that surrounds them. This light is a living light . . . it gives them love as a Mother would . . . it calms them . . . it gives them joy . . . and a deep understanding of knowing they’re well taken care of and safe.

If I ask them to tell me who they are or what they look like, even pets who passed when they were very old usually present a younger version of themselves. They never want to be remembered as they were in their last days. Instead, they see themselves as healthy, happy, and enjoying life. And that’s how they want us to remember them. They often ask us to choose a picture of them at their very best and display it where it can be seen by everyone.

Some animals remember their mission in life. Some remember their human friends and interactions, or the animals they used to live with.

All of them know who we are, what we did for them, and how much they were loved. Many, whose spirits remain around us for the duration of our lives here on earth, tell us they’ll be reunited with us in the light.

Often they can tell us what we did after they left, how we remembered them, the little things we did for them, and how they feel about what we did.

Sometimes their comments are very specific. For example, pets have told me they saw the color of the urn used for their ashes, or their names engraved on an object, or their name tag being carried on their human’s key chain.

They’re also each focused on helping their humans in different ways. One animal might tell his human that it’s time to pick up his food bowl from the floor and put it away, while another might say that her human needs to carry her collar around for awhile longer. Still others will say it’s time for their humans to stop grieving and start loving a new pet.

Usually, my clients want specific answers from their pets about a whole list of questions, but sometimes, they’ll want an answer to a more general, but very important question, as one of my clients did.

She asked: What about those animals who died of abuse, neglect, or torture? Those who never knew a loving touch or a friendly human? What happens to them?

The answer was first given to me a long time ago, and then, over the years, as I continued talking with animals who are in Spirit, it became even more clear.

When animals, who have experienced love, transition into Spirit, their spirit energy often tends to remain around their human family during the family’s mourning period. After that, some of them simply continue to learn on the spirit side, while others, who may be a bit more advanced, want to become greeters.

These greeters, I’m told, have a very special responsibility. They’re the ones in charge of receiving animal souls who are just making their transitions into Spirit. This time of transition is often called crossing The Rainbow Bridge.

The greeters receive the souls of all new arrivals at the edge of the light and guide them until they’re completely embraced within the heart of the loving light.

Being met by a greeter is especially important for those animals who have suffered abuse or neglect at the hands of a human. The greeters will never leave any of these precious beings until they know for sure their souls have recovered from all the suffering they experienced during their last incarnation. These new arrivals will be guided, loved, and cared for with more dedication and diligence than any other souls until their emotional scars have healed.

In a way, these troubled souls are better tended to than regular souls. They’ve returned to Spirit after volunteering their suffering in order to try to bring attention to the need for better treatment of their species.

This is what I’ve been told over and over again, although I’ve never been told why certain individual animals have had to endure what they did. There just seems to be something bigger at work here, about which I’ve never been given any further information.

But what I do know is, there’s great love on the other side, and animals are very involved with helping each other. They’re all benefiting from the sacrifices of those who have gone before them.

I never hear a reproach, never a complaint. Those animal souls who have been abused, neglected, or tortured are the best and most centered souls I’ve ever spoken with. I say this because no matter what they’ve had to go through, their last thought is to send mankind unconditional LOVE.

So, it is with love that I approach these wonderful spirits, and it is with love that we’re able to maintain an open channel of communication.

How Soon After Passing Is an Animal in Spirit Ready to Communicate?

It’s easy to understand why humans, who are grieving the loss of their dear pet friends, want to talk with them in Spirit immediately after they die.

But . . . my answer is always the same. It’s important to wait at least 30 days before we attempt a communication with a pet who has recently made his or her transition.

There are two reasons for this: we need to give newly departed souls enough time to adjust to their new environment in Spirit, and we need to give the humans enough time to grieve for their deceased pets.

Since I’ve been communicating with animals my whole life, I definitely know there are only very, very few who will be able to communicate almost immediately after passing.

The souls who are capable of communicating right away are very old souls who have certain memories and understandings imprinted into them after many lifetimes. Younger souls, however, are simply just not skilled enough to be able to maintain a good communication very soon after they find themselves in Spirit.

It’s equally important, though, for humans to allow themselves enough time to grieve the loss of their pets, and begin their own healing journey.

If you’re in the throes of pain, disbelief, and sadness, or if you’re feeling guilty and want to apologize for something you did or something you didn’t do, you’re going to be blocking yourself from receiving any important messages your pet wants to send you.

If you’re not sleeping well, not eating, and continually asking God why He let this happen to your pet, you’re not ready to hear your pet’s important messages.

You need time to heal so that you can be open to everything your pet in Spirit wants you to know.

To wait at least 30 days before you attempt communication with an animal who’s now in Spirit will give you a chance to accept your loss and be more open to communication with your loved one. It will be a much better experience at that point because your sadness won’t cloud the information that’s coming through.

So many of my clients want to receive clear signs from their animals in Spirit. They want to know if they’re still around them, but if the human is going through a time of extreme sadness, once again, they’re blocking themselves from receiving the signs, as well as the messages, that their loved ones are trying to send them.

Even if the animal is sending them some visual signs or auditory messages, it’s impossible for the human to receive them because all of their attention is still focused on how they feel, and on how they can make their sadness or guilt go away.

After around 30 days, though, both pets in Spirit, and their humans who are missing them, are usually ready to enjoy a good communication.

Is communicating with a pet in Spirit different from communicating with a pet in human experience? The answer is, No.

As an animal communicator, I’m able to receive images from animal spirits in the same way that I’m able to receive them from the spirit of a being who’s in human experience. That’s because all communication is actually spirit to spirit, not body to body.

While the way we communicate is the same, the things animals in Spirit want to talk about are usually quite different though.

Pets in Spirit always communicate about love, about accepting, about their mission, about everything they’re learning. They don’t want to be asked questions about pain. They don’t experience pain anymore, so it’s difficult for them to have to remember what it was like. Instead, they send wonderful messages of hope, of healing, and of guidance for your life.

All pets in Spirit also tell me that when it’s your time to cross over into heaven, you will be reunited with them, and they’ll be there waiting for you.

How Do Dogs and Cats See Pets in Spirit?

My clients often ask me, Why is my pet able to see other pets who have passed into Spirit, but I can’t?

This is one of the best ways I can think of to explain it:

We can all clearly see the spokes of a bicycle wheel when it’s at rest.

When the bicycle starts to move slowly we can still see the spokes.

Then, at some point, the wheels begin turning so fast that it looks as if the center of the wheel is hollow and the spokes are no longer there at all.

Similarly, when people are using earthly bodies, they’re vibrating at much lower rates of energy. When souls are in Spirit, however, their energy is vibrating at such a high rate that our human eyes can no longer see them.

Our animals, however, are able to see a much wider range of vibrations than we can, and therefore most cats and many dogs are able to see spirit energy.

They may at times appear to be looking off into space at nothing in particular, but when they do, they may be observing energies that most humans just cannot see.

You’ll be reading true stories in this book now. They’re about pets in earthly experience, as well as about pets in Spirit.

Hopefully the information in each of the articles in this Prologue will have provided you with some insights ahead of time about pets in Spirit so you’ll be able to better enjoy the wonderful insights they have to share with us.

Chapter 1

Your Pet Called

Troy

Your pet called . . . he has something to tell you!

TroyWithNature.jpg

I met Troy many years ago, around 2003. He was just a young Sheltie puppy, maybe 4 to 6 months old at that time. Even though he was still so young, he was already deaf and almost blind.

It was a nice spring day, and I was at a clinic in Highland, California where I met with clients every Wednesday.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me first go back a couple of years in time to tell you how I came to be in a place where I would one day have the privilege of meeting this very special dog.

Two years before . . .

Sometime in 2001, I received a call asking me to do an in-person reading in the city of San Bernardino, California. This was about an hour and a half drive away from where I lived at the time.

This new client had read my first book What Your Animals Tell Me and liked it. Now she wanted me to do a reading for each of her nine dogs.

I recall thinking it was a long way for me to drive, and it would be a very costly appointment for her with so many pets. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do it, but she’s a very persuasive person, and she wouldn’t take no for an answer.

I finally scheduled her for a day in the future, half hoping she’d have time to think about the expense and decide to cancel. But she didn’t!

The appointment day finally came and I found myself knocking on her door. From all around, I could hear barking, barking, barking coming at me from several different directions. And those were the barks of big dogs.

She opened the door and invited me in just as four huge Dobermans came excitedly lunging toward me. I was a little taken off guard, but she wasn’t correcting them, so I didn’t feel there was any cause for concern. Things then quieted down fairly quickly.

Once I was inside the house, we went into the first room to my right, which was perfect because it had a glass door.

There were four Doberman Pinschers and five Manchester terriers, nine dogs in all, waiting to talk with me. I asked her to bring only one dog into the room at a time while the others waited on the other side of the glass door.

Because I’d done readings for many multiple dog households in the past, I knew if the dogs were too close together that my pictures might get confused, leading me to say something about one dog that was actually coming from another. That’s because, when there are multiple dogs present, all of them are listening, even though I’m directly speaking to only one of them.

Many times, in group situations, I’ll hear multiple and differing answers to my questions. That can become confusing if I can’t be sure who said what, especially if they’re mostly the same breed of dog. It’s a chance I have to take, though, for the sake of my clients, even though it can be quite a challenge at times.

I did end up talking with all nine of her dogs, and I felt my client was satisfied.

Intertwining our skills . . .

She was so satisfied in fact that she invited me to come to her clinic in Highland so I could watch her in action. She’s a chiropractor who treats both people and pets.

The way she worked with her animal clients was impressive. I thought I was just there to observe, but she kept asking me questions. Her questions were specific and they took me by surprise because, at that time in my career, no one had ever asked me questions like these before. Things like: After I made this adjustment does he feel better or worse? Is the pain dull or sharp? Is it static or does it travel?

As I listened to the information coming from the animals and shared it with her, she was then able to make certain adjustments she wouldn’t have thought of making before. She could make them now because of what the animals were able to tell us.

We each have a special love and compassion for animals, and as we began to work synergistically together, we quickly became friends.

She then asked me to come to her clinic every Wednesday. She believed in me so much that she made sure I always had clients waiting to see me every week. And on Wednesdays, when her own clients would bring their pets in for an adjustment, she would often recommend that some stay to talk with me.

I truly thank her for her faith in me, and for giving me the opportunity to be able to help so many more pets and their humans.

Two years later . . .

It was one of those Wednesdays, almost two years later, when I first met Troy in the clinic waiting room. Two ladies came in with three dogs. I spoke only briefly with Troy and his moms before they were all called into a treatment room.

Then a couple of weeks later, Dr. Jacquie knocked on my door to tell me she had some clients I really needed to talk with.

The same two ladies came in. I didn’t remember them, and I didn’t immediately connect Troy with my first encounter in the waiting room, so for me, it was as if this was my very first meeting with all of them.

One moved to a corner, sat down, and didn’t even want to look at me. I can spot a skeptic a mile away because, in my line of work, I encounter a lot of them. The other one was holding a young puppy. She sat down in another corner of the room.

The puppy, Troy, was a Sheltie, mostly white with a big black spot on his right eye, but he wasn’t doing the normal things puppies do. He was anxious and moving, sitting and lying down, standing then sitting, and he never looked at me. I sensed something was wrong but I had no idea what it might be.

Normally, a dog processes information through his nose, so I put my hand out for him to sniff, watching to see what his reaction would be. Most dogs would sniff then look around, but it seemed as if Troy was trying to take in the scent of my entire body. Because this was such an unusual reaction, I asked one of his moms if he was blind. She told me he was mostly blind and deaf. Those are genetic problems many white Shelties are born with.

At this time, bells went off in my head. Usually I’m very visual. That means animals and I communicate by sending pictures back and forth that I then translate into words so people can understand what the animals want to say. But in this case, Troy couldn’t communicate with me in either a visual or a hearing way.

Add to that, such young puppies can’t usually send me a lot of information either, because they don’t yet understand life the way adult dogs do. Even so, I was still able to communicate with him empathically by connecting in a special way with his feelings.

My first conversation with Troy . . .

I wasn’t expecting to find out anything very important, but was I ever in for a surprise! He knew a lot more than any of us thought he did.

The first thing Troy said was, They think I’m stupid because I can’t hear them giving me commands. I’m not! I’m very smart, and if they do a good job of training me, I’ll be the best dog they’ve ever had. I’m not stupid, I’m just deaf. Plus, I can’t see them from far away, so they have to come really close to me if they want me to see their hands.

When I relayed this information to my two clients, now even the skeptic was listening. Nancy, who is now one of my friends, couldn’t believe what their little puppy was saying. Kay, the one holding Troy, was laughing.

While this was going on between them, Troy interrupted me to say, Tell them my tail can move up if I want it to. They’re wondering why my tail is always down. I’ll move it up for them. And he did!

Laughing even harder now, they both told me they were wondering that very morning if there was something wrong with his tail because he wasn’t moving it. Later I was told that as soon as they got home he wagged his tail for the first time.

Troy had come in for a spinal adjustment and Dr. Jacquie, the chiropractor, wanted to know how he felt after she’d manipulated his spine.

He said he was feeling fine now and he thanked her for helping him. He told his humans to be patient with him because he was going to respond to his training in time.

Learning about Troy . . .

Since he was deaf, he’d never heard a single command, but with what little eyesight he initially had, he did at least learn to respond to sign language.

Kay and Nancy have an agility course at their home where they teach other dogs how to practice agility techniques. They also do other types of training so they know dogs very well, but Troy was their biggest challenge.

Although he couldn’t hear, and his eyesight was seriously impaired in the beginning, Troy still managed to become a Grand Champion in agility. He was often instrumental in teaching others how to do it, too, and he loved the excitement as well as the rush of competition.

As he aged, though, he began to have a significant number of really difficult health challenges. Among many other things, his eyes developed severe cataracts that even two surgeries couldn’t help, so eventually, he completely lost his eyesight.

Once he lost his eyesight altogether, his humans began to use the leash as their communication tool. Kay and Nancy never gave up on him and he went wherever they went, navigating stairs, and confidently going up into either their truck or motorhome and back down again.

When he just couldn’t handle agility competitions any longer because of his many health challenges, he’d still be there on the sidelines cheering his sisters and brother onward.

Troy had been doing poorly just before he turned 14, but he would still champion on for a while longer. When he turned 15, though, his health became even more compromised, and he promised he’d let his humans know when it was time.

He was doing so poorly one day that they sent me an e-mail asking me how long they should wait. After I connected with Troy, his answer was, Until I tell you otherwise. He was always very strong, very hard headed, and he had a huge personality. He wanted to stay until he was ready to leave.

It’s a rare instance that someone’s pet initiates a communication with me to tell me their time is up, but it has happened before. I had such a special connection with Troy, that one morning, about six months later, he did reach out to me to tell me his time was up. I didn’t hesitate to write Nancy an urgent e-mail letting her know what Troy had told me.

She already knew. He’d been doing so very poorly again that she and Kay had talked about what was best for him. They’d wisely made a decision to have the vet come to their home that afternoon. Everything was taken care of very peacefully, and Troy, who was then 15 ½ years old, crossed over The Rainbow Bridge on October 31st, 2017.

I felt a rush of emotions that day. Someone who’d taught us so much was finally leaving, and there’d be no more Troy for us to enjoy, but at the same time, I was so happy that I’d been able to listen to him whenever he needed me throughout his entire life.

The Idea of Reincarnation . . .

During one of the last times we had a conversation with Troy about death and dying, one of the questions Nancy and Kay asked him was whether or not he’d consider coming back to them again in the future. At the moment, he told them he wanted to come back, but he didn’t know when or where.

The question about reincarnation often does come up with my clients, but the fact is, animals can only determine the whens, wheres, and hows of any return after they’ve been in Spirit for awhile.

We need to wait patiently until they’re ready to make the decision about coming back. And even when they do, they might not think coming back to the same humans is necessary, either for their own soul’s growth and development, or to help their humans grow and learn more lessons. So . . . the topic would not come up again until after he made his transition.

Imagine my surprise, when one day in early July 2018, I was sitting at my computer and I received a message from Troy in Spirit asking excitedly, Did you find me yet? Did you look for me yet? I want you to look for me. I’m back! Did you look for me yet?

I told Troy it wasn’t my place to look for him, but I’d contact his moms right away and ask them to look.

I immediately e-mailed my friends to let them know that the soul we’d known as Troy was back as another personality, and it was time to start looking on the internet for another Sheltie to see if they could reconnect with this special soul.

At this point, you may be wondering how I’m able to communicate with an animal who’s no longer physically present on earth, so let’s answer that question before we continue with Troy’s story . . .

Communicating with animals in Spirit

When I first started communicating with animals, I didn’t know I could communicate with the soul of an animal who’d moved on into Spirit. Then in time I came to learn that, even though the earthly body ceases to function, the energy or soul of an animal never dies. The animal soul doesn’t use a physical earthly body anymore, but it does continue to exist using its spiritual form. The same is true for people.

While both people and animals have to use physical bodies while they’re in earthly experience, a body is nothing . . . and can do nothing by itself . . . unless it is animated by the soul of a being.

When we’re using earthly bodies, we usually think we’re communicating body to body, but that’s not so. Even when we’re using bodies, communication is always taking place soul to soul. This is because it’s the soul that is responsible for all thoughts, actions, and communications, not the body.

So, I’m able to communicate with animals in Spirit in the same way I do when they’re visible to us on earth because we’re always communicating soul to soul.

When an animal is in Spirit, the conversation might be a little different because things that happened on the earth plane don’t really interest them anymore.

For that reason, they seldom answer questions about what their favorite toys or favorite foods were, or even about how they felt during a vacation when they were left alone. Those things are not what’s important to them once they’re in Spirit. But I can ask them about reincarnation . . . which brings us back to Troy . . .

Watching, waiting, and so many coincidences . . .

In July, when I told Kay and Nancy to start looking online for another Sheltie, they wanted to meet with me in person as soon as possible. Just a day before I was to leave on an extended trip to Argentina, I met with them and we talked with Troy, in Spirit, about the fact that he wanted to come back to his moms again in a different body, and as a different personality.

This time, though, he wanted to change a few things. But what he didn’t want to change was the fact that he was going to be deaf again. He said . . . and we all laughed about it . . . They talk too much, but if I’m deaf, they’ll have to communicate with me in a more quiet way.

Troy then said he was going to be born at a breeder who was far away from them. He also said his coming was going to be like a surprise or coincidence for them and they needed to be ready for anything.

It’s not often we’re given the opportunity to share life with a special being who’s willing to come back to us a second time, so of course, Kay and Nancy were delighted with the idea that Troy wanted to be with them again, albeit as a totally different personality.

They asked him if the new puppy could wait until the end of August when renovations on their home would be complete. He said this would be ok.

On the morning of September 1st, Nancy was surprised to receive word from a friend who wanted her to go on Facebook and look for a particular breeder. That breeder had just posted a picture of a young Sheltie puppy.

While Nancy’s friend already knew about this breeder, she didn’t yet know that this particular puppy was deaf.

If the picture had been posted any earlier, the puppy could already have been adopted by someone else, but come to find out later on, the breeder hadn’t even thought about posting the puppy’s picture until it was around three months old. When the time came for posting, it was exactly when Kay and Nancy’s renovations were complete.

So here was a friend . . . telling them about a breeder who was far away from
