CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION
Hello beautiful reader. First and foremost, I think you’re a pretty fantastic human being for not only buying/borrowing/e-reading my glorious book, but also for taking a major step toward bettering your career. Secondly, I know what you’re thinking: Oh my gosh, that adorably attractive girl on the cover is the author of this book? How have I never heard of her? Why isn’t she a famous millionaire? Shouldn’t the two of us be sipping margaritas together in Belize?
Now yes, it is hard to believe that I, Meghan Deanna Smith, am not a famous millionaire (YET). But what I am is a working actress who’s pretty qualified to help guide you, my remarkable reader, through the crazy journey that lies ahead once you have that problematic Acting Degree. Oh, and maybe one day we will enjoy fruity cocktails together in a tropical setting. Who knows, the possibilities are endless. But I digress. Let’s get back to this book and how it will help advance your professional goals.
A few years ago, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance from a private college in New York state. In other words, I’m $37,000 in debt. Upon graduating, I realized I had read dozens of performance books, taken countless workshops, and was familiar with pretty much every acting technique there is from Stanislavsky to Keanu Reeves. Basically, I knew how to act the crap out of any material, and I was given all the tools needed to analyze any script. But what I quickly realized was that I had no clue how to actually GET the role. I knew exactly what to do once I was cast, but getting cast immediately seemed impossible.
I borrowed tons of acting books from the library, praying they’d reveal some big secret my professors seemed to have hidden from me. But it was always the same. The books taught me how to act—not how to get cast, or how to get an agent, or most importantly, how to be able to financially live off acting. Thus, I had to learn the hard way, through experience. I moved to a town just outside of New York City for a bit and then made the big trek to Los Angeles where I basically learned how to survive as a starving artist (emphasis on starving). I figured out which acting websites posted castings, I discovered how to get an agent, and I learned the importance of marketing myself. But all of this took time. It didn’t happen overnight and unfortunately my daily mantra turned into: Gosh, I wish they taught me this in college.
Throughout my journey after graduation, I kept making mental notes about my experiences. I often thought, Oooo when I’m famous and people will pay to just be in my presence, I should tell young aspiring actors this helpful tip... Or that… Or this!
And then I realized I did not have to wait until I was a household name. In fact, even though I’m not filthy stinking rich off of acting, I am still a working actor, I’m still living in the entertainment capital of the world, and I already have so much information to share. That’s how this book endeavor began. I don’t want anyone pursuing a career in acting to feel confused or alone or as if their degree was pointless. Although the majority of my advice will be targeted toward the film industry (because that’s what currently pays my bills), a lot of my advice is also applicable to the theater world. After all, my degree is in Theater Performance, and the two industries aren’t that different from one another.
So, long story short, this book is designed to guide you, help you, and make you feel like you can totally survive in the ginormously scary acting industry. Enjoy.
P.S. This book is a bunch of advice—not promises or concrete facts. If you follow my suggestions and don’t become successful, please don’t sue me! I’m just kidding… but really, don’t sue me…
CHAPTER ONE
HEADSHOTS, REELS,
AND WEBSITES (Oh My!)
So by now, you've at least heard of headshots, reels, and websites. However, after graduating college, I only had one of the three—headshots—which was no bueno. To be honest, my headshots weren't even that good. In my opinion, having these three things is ESSENTIAL to booking work and being taken seriously. I'm going to break them all down individually.
HEADSHOTS
First and foremost, let's talk about the all-important shots of your head. A headshot is an eight-inch by ten-inch color photo of your beautiful face. You read that correctly: eight inches by ten inches, not the standard printer paper size
