About this ebook

Let us pretend for a moment that we are not human beings, but rather blue monkeys living on our own little island in the endless sea.
We live as we always have - eating our melons and playing in the sand and splashing in the sea.

And now let us imagine that something unexpected happens.
Something we could not have imagined.

    ONCE, THERE WAS AN ISLAND.

And on this island there lived a race of blue monkeys. The monkeys lived on the beach along the shores of the island, and they ate melons. They ate white melons, and they ate blue melons. They ate white melons in the morning, and they ate blue melons in the afternoon.

And they were very happy monkeys.

In the center of the island was a mountain. The mountain was round and tall. The slopes of the mountain extended down to the beach and were covered with grass. The grass was very soft, and the monkeys slept on the grass at night.

During the day the monkeys played in the sand, and they splashed in the sea, and they rested on the soft grass and dipped their feet in the water. And in the morning they ate white melons, and in the afternoon they ate blue melons.

And they were very happy monkeys.

Every night, while the monkeys were sleeping on the soft grass, light rains came and small waves broke upon the beach. And when the waves receded, they left behind white melons scattered along the beach. When the monkeys awoke in the morning, they walked along the beach until they found some white melons, and they sat down on the sand and ate the white melons, and they looked out over the sea where the white melons had come from. And they were very grateful for the white melons, and they were very grateful for the sea, and they were very happy and grateful monkeys.

Every afternoon, when the sun was overhead, blue melons came rolling and bouncing down the slopes of the mountain. Some of the blue melons rolled across the beach and into the sea, while others came to rest on the sand.

When the monkeys grew hungry in the afternoon, they walked along the beach until they found some blue melons, and they sat down on the sand and ate the blue melons, and they looked up at the mountain where the blue melons had come from. And they were very grateful for the blue melons, and they were very grateful for the mountain, and they were very happy and grateful monkeys.

At night, when the waves came, the blue melons that remained on the beach were washed away into the sea. And the next morning, in their place the monkeys found fresh white melons.

The blue monkeys lived this way for many years. Many generations of monkeys came and went, and they ate white melons in the morning and blue melons in the afternoon.

Each spring brought with it the arrival of newborn monkeys. And when they were born, the monkeys were very light blue in color. As they grew older, their coats turned deeper until, when they were adults, their coats were the color of the blue sky on a sunny day. The adult monkeys remained the color of the blue sky until they grew old, and then their coats turned lighter once again. By the time the monkeys were very old, their coats were once again the light blue color of the newborn monkeys, with perhaps some distinguished and noble streaks of grey.

The youngest and the oldest monkeys were treated well by the other monkeys, and were always the first to eat white melons in the morning and blue melons in the afternoon. Most monkeys lived to be very old, indeed.

Year after year, generation after generation, the monkeys lived this way along the beaches of their island. And they ate white melons in the morning, and they ate blue melons in the afternoon. And they played in the sun and in the sand and in the sea.

And they were very happy monkeys.

ONE DAY, AN INQUISITIVE LITTLE monkey asked his father where the melons came from. And his father said to him, The white melons come from the sea, and the blue melons come from the mountain.

The little monkey thought about this, and then said to his father, But how do the white melons get into the sea? And how do the blue melons get onto the mountain?

But his father said, I don’t know. You should ask the elder monkeys to tell you more about the melons. They know much more than I do, and they tell wonderful stories.

So the inquisitive little monkey went to see the elder monkeys, and he asked them to explain where the melons came from. The elder monkeys listened to the young monkey’s request and then sat quietly, thinking. Then the eldest monkey began to speak:

"A long time ago, before there were any monkeys, before there was a mountain or an island or blue melons or white melons, there was just the sea and the sky. Much time went by, and the sea and the sky yearned for one another.

"And when their yearning had grown to be very strong, the sea and the sky touched, and the sky became full of clouds and the sea became rough and it began to rain. And as the raindrops fell into the sea, they turned into white melons.

After many hours, the rain stopped and the sea grew calm and the sky grew light, and the sea was full of melons and they were the purest white, and the sun rose up for the first time and cast its light on the sea of white melons and it was a glorious morning.

The eldest monkey continued, "As the sun climbed higher in the sky that first morning, the sea grew warmer, and as the sun reached the top of the sky, a blue melon floated to the surface of the sea, and it was the only blue melon in a sea of white melons. And the sun continued its path across the sky, and sank into the sea, and the sky grew dark and full of clouds, and the sea became rough, and the rains came, and the raindrops fell into the sea and turned into white melons.

"When the rain stopped, the sea grew calm, and the sky grew light, and the sun rose from the sea of white melons and cast its light on the white melons and on the one blue melon, and it was another glorious morning.

"Now on this, the second day, as the sun reached the top of the sky, several more blue melons floated to the surface of the sea, and these blue melons formed a circle and rose up below the first blue melon from the previous day, and they pushed the first blue melon up out of the sea, and so the first blue melon was on top of the circle of blue melons and it soon grew warm and dry in the sun.

"This blue melon looked out over the sea of white melons, and it was a beautiful sight. It was not long, however, before it yearned to be back in the sea with the other melons, and so the first blue melon rolled over and into the sea. It then grew lighter in color and soon became white, and then it drifted off to be among the other white melons.

"The next day, this now being the third day, as the sun reached the top of the sky, many more blue melons rose to the surface of the sea, and they formed a new and bigger circle of blue melons, and they pushed
