Kacy Carter

Kacy Carter writes from her experience as a mom of teenage daughters. She got her idea for Set to Serve from watching the interactions of girls on her daughter's volleyball team. The book is meant to be entertaining for girls who love sports, but Kacy also hopes the book will encourage them to know that being different and even imperfect can be used for good.

    Chapter 1

Lauren could hear the noise from the gym before she even opened the door.  Her first practice for the Jr. High volleyball season was about to begin.  She couldn’t wait to meet her coach in person and see which friends from summer volleyball camp would be on her team.

Once inside, she could see two other teams throwing the balls into the ball cart and huddling together for final words from their coaches.   She waved to Emily and Brooke, happy to see two of her friends, but sad that they were obviously on different teams.

Just then a voice on the intercom announced that anyone on the Mustangs’ team was to meet at the far corner of the gym.  Lauren quickly dashed to join her new teammates, but her heart sank as she realized that no one else on her team was from volleyball camp.

She had made lots of new friends at camp last summer and Oak Valley Recreational League only had six teams.   Couldn’t there be someone she knew on her team?

Hi, Mustangs, her coach began.  My name is Megan.  I will be your coach this season.  I’m looking forward to having fun and watching each of you improve your volleyball skills.  Before we start, let’s go around the circle and tell me your name and what school you are from.

Lauren listened closely and tried to remember the girls’ names, but she was more impressed with the fact that all the girls except her were from the public schools in town.  None of the other girls were home-schooled.  Watching the way they played around and joked with each other, she knew that all of them knew at least one other person.  Probably from school, she thought to herself.  She forced a smile, but she wasn’t smiling on the inside.  It would be easier to make friends if there was at least someone who didn’t already have a friend.

    Lauren?

She snapped her attention back to the coach calling her name.  Yes?  The other girls giggled.

I want everybody to see how many names we remember.  Let’s start with you.  Lauren could feel her face grow hot as she realized she had totally missed the names of the last two players.

Okay.  The tall girl to her left was Katie.  Then there was another tall girl with braces and an acne problem.  That was Erica.  Lauren slowly started naming the girls around the circle.  She remembered Ashley, Madison, Taylor, and Hannah.  She paused and looked at her coach.

Good job, Lauren.  It’s always the hardest for the first person.  Pointing to the next girl, she helped with, That’s Peyton and then Kaitlyn.  Ok, Katie.  It’s your turn.

Lauren quietly and slowly let out her breath. She watched as the other girls were able to quickly and successfully name off most of the girls in the circle.  By the time Kaitlyn’s turn
