The Molested - Temika Smith
THE START OF IT ALL
Claudia was awoken to a loud crashing sound, screaming, and cursing. She laid there trying to ignore the noise and go back to sleep but it was too noisy. She was not scared or at the least bit curious about what was going on behind the thin walls because she had been awoken the same way so many times in her fourteen years of life. It was her dad beating her mom either because she was mouthing back to him or sneaking around with another man. Claudia strained her eyes to look around the dark room to see if any of her siblings had been awaken but neither of her two younger sisters she shared the room with seem to have been affected at all.
Claudia is child number five of twelve children. She is also one of the twelve who knew she was not really a child of her fathers. There are also four other siblings who are bastards like Claudia even though there so called parents had been married for over twenty years. She often thought about how different she and the other bastard children looked nothing like those that belonged to William. All of the children that are his have light complexions and a good grade of hair. It did not make much difference to Claudia that she wasn’t really his; she loved the only man she knew as her dad because he never treated one any different from the other. He is mean to all of them and they knew to do what he said with no back talk. William being there for her even though he is not her real father made her love him even harder. She was kind of upset with her mom, Judy for sleeping around on him. She later found that he had been sleeping around on her for years. Even though it didn’t make it right, she had seen Judy cry several nights because William had not been home for days at a time. Claudia is too young to run the streets like her older siblings had done but not too young to always have to watch her younger siblings while William and Judy went out to spend time with which ever fling they decided would occupy their time for that night. She had been lying in bed daydreaming when she heard Judy say, I can’t take this anymore. I’m getting my kids and leaving.
Claudia had heard that several times before and she prayed for the fight to be over so she could get some sleep. William called Judy whore and several other profound names.
Judy had grown quiet to get him to calm down after so many years. She figured out that was the only way to get him to stop. It seemed as if Judy had grown accustom to what would happen when she got home from a night out although she would be sore and bruised up for days after. Twenty more minutes went by and things had gotten quiet. Claudia did not want to live her adult life cheating on her husband and fighting all the time. She wanted to be in love with her husband who would be just as much in love with her. They would have a big house with only two children: one boy and one girl. Claudia laid thinking until she fell asleep.
The next morning was different; Claudia was awaken by Judy’s brother who told her to get up quickly and throw some of her belongings into a bag. Claudia stretched and laid there wondering what the big rush was for. But when he began to yell at her to move immediately, she jumped out of bed. When she stepped out of her room there were several bags packed up in the living room. Judy was dressing her younger siblings. She noticed a gun on her uncle’s hip and instantly got scared to ask any questions. Claudia quickly showered, brushed her teeth, got dressed and started putting her clothes in trash bags. She listened closely to the conversation between her mom and her uncle but made sure she kept moving the whole time. William had blacked Judy’s eye and bust her lip the last time. She was packing her this and leaving the state while he was at work. She was not sure if he would be home for lunch so she planned to take what she could and go. Judy was crying because she would not be able to take all twelve of her children with her. Judy was very upset. She cried and mumbled to herself while driving. On the way out she stopped to say goodbye to her oldest daughter who had her own place. Her oldest son had gone fishing for the weekend so she knew she would not get to say bye to him. She cried even harder at the thought.
Judy did not even know where the other three older children were, but that was no surprise; Judy knew that had happened on several occasions. They could stay out for days, so she could not wait around for them. Claudia wondered where they would go because the way Judy was talking they were going far away from the state of Alabama. That is where their family is, so where else would they go?
How would they survive? William paid all the bills. Claudia began to get scared thinking about them being a few hours away from being hungry and homeless just because her parents couldn’t get it together. Claudia began to sneak food into her bag along with a can opener just in case they needed it. She was summoned to help load the car and tears began to fall down her face. She tried to wipe them away as quickly as they fell but Judy had already seen them.
She asked Claudia why she was crying while steadily moving. Claudia loved her dad and did not want to leave him; she was also scared to leave him but knew that saying anything about what she was feeling would only upset Judy more, so she acted as if she did not hear her mom’s question. The car was loaded and Judy hugged her brother and told the children to do the same. She told him that she would call him when she reached Cincinnati to let him know that she was okay. Claudia’s heart sank; she could not go that far from her dad. She had only heard about Cincinnati when studying the states at school. What would happen to her other siblings? Would she ever see them or her dad again? Claudia began to cry uncontrollably. Judy told her that everything would be alright as they drove away.
CHAPTER 2
THE BEGINNING & THE END
Claudia had only been in Cincinnati for six months before she started to rebel. She had turned fifteen shortly after they arrived but was built like a grown woman. The life there was much faster than the small town life she had come from. She told all the guys she met she was eighteen. All the house joints in the neighborhood allowed her to party there. She met a very attractive man who was twenty and all the women were crazy about him. He always wore dressy clothes with a nice hat to match which looked like the hat Claudia only saw pimps wear on television. He had long wavy jet black hair and kept his beard and mustache clean cut. He is tall, slender and has brown skin. She is very attractive to him. His name is Harvey. Him and Claudia had fallen for one another very quickly. There were always several women around him asking him to step outside to talk. The women were of different ages and some of them were very pretty. They were jealous because he seemed to be crazy about Claudia even though he had several other women. When she was with him they had to show her respect. Claudia was very nice looking herself; she stood around 5’7 with medium length hair that was always combed nice. Although her clothes were old she kept herself looking nice. She was thick in all the right places: her breast, hips and butt matched her frame perfectly. Harvey was good to her; he took her shopping, paid for her hair to be done every week, taught her to drive and took her to get her license. Claudia never heard him say anything about going to work. Harvey always had money. She had spent the night with him several times. He never got up to go work or even mentioned a job. She really did not care what it was he did for a living as long as she got the things she needed and he showed her a good time. One night while they were out Claudia tried to have a glass of liquor but instantly began to vomit. She noticed she had been tired a lot lately and thought maybe she was coming down with a
