    wake up

    (to my Self)

    on the sunshine coast

A stressed life. I've used this as an excuse for my lazy response to the back aches that grew out of the endurance needed to sit at a computer and write a lengthy biography of an Indian philosopher, a ‘non-guru’, Jiddu Krishnamurti.

I'm overweight. Stiffened muscles grip and lock up my once-pliable vertebrae. Finally one winter, I hit fearful pain.

When I first feel my back tightening its screws, I check with the locals around Eumundi, a tiny tidy town in south-east Queensland, and find Gwyn, a Shiatsu master masseur. At the weekly market, Gwyn's prayer flags and the name of his practice – Zen Thai Shiatsu – announce that this tent is a blend of esoteric wisdom traditions. I remember my daughter's ballet days when Shiatsu would set her muscles right in minutes. I watch this Shiatsu wizard, Gwyn, intently – a glance into his blue eyes is enough to feel a vibration, an invitation.
