Major Nature and the Masked Bandit Caper

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful emerald forest nestled quietly in an undiscovered corner of the world.  In this magical forest, there was a glimmering lake, a jagged mountain range and a powerful hero.  This noble guardian was a brown bear with the strength of ten elephants and a mission to protect the Great Woods Forest.  These are the tales of…MAJOR NATURE!

It was a warm autumn day in the Great Woods Forest. The leaves were green and a light breeze gusted through the dense forest. The squirrels gathered food, the deer grazed tranquilly and the brown bears lounged in their caves, enjoying the beautiful day. The rabbits played in the grass among the flowers and the beavers gnawed the bark of a willow tree near the Pohanka River.  It seemed that nothing could disturb this peaceful day. Suddenly, a stronger breeze picked up and something new entered the forest! It blew among the trees, lightly and delicately, almost searching for something. It gently blew from tree to tree, uncertain of what it was searching for but searched anyway. The deer became vigilant, the squirrels paused cautiously and the rabbits popped their heads up to stare. No one in the forest had ever seen anything like it. With a flash of yellow and red, it fluttered onto a branch…waiting.

At the northwest corner of the forest was a mountain range comprised of a myriad of different caves. The old caves were inhabited by the mighty brown bears of the forest.  In the warm autumn air, some of the bear cubs came out to play while the older bears stood at the entrances to their caves. The bear parents smiled and waved at each other, watching with pride as their cubs rolled around in the leaves. One bear in particular, a mother bear wearing a pink, frilly, polka-dotted apron swept the entrance to her cave using a tree branch. She smiled and whistled a happy tune while she worked. As she finished, a large male bear named Marcus approached the cave. The mother bear smiled at Marcus. It was a smile that she had worn for him for a long time.

Hello sweetheart! How was your day?  Marla Bear asked her husband with a welcoming smile.

Hello, Marla! he said as he gazed into her beautiful honey brown eyes.  Marcus was a large brown bear whose grayish features subtly began to show his age. He had an old gash on his right leg that he contracted many years ago.  Marcus had intense yet kind eyes and a gentle nature. His gold rimmed glasses slipped down his face as he walked into the cave that he and Marla called home.  He walked on his hind legs and carried a long, thick tree branch in his right hand that he used as a walking stick.

How’s your leg today, dear? Marla asked.

Same as always, Marcus frowned, will our son Brian be joining us for dinner tonight? he asked curiously.

Well, I hope so. That’s why I’ve been tidying up! Marla said with a proud look. Marcus merely grumbled. Marla put down her broom branch and lightly poked Marcus in the ribs. She smiled at him, Oh, you old grouch you! Marcus smiled back and hugged her, his gold glasses almost falling off his chocolate nose.

Their son, Brian Bear was an ordinary bear that lived in the Marland Caves at the foot of Rocky Point Mountain.  The ancient caves were part of the jagged mountain range but were isolated from the rest of Rocky Point. He lived separately from the rest of the Brown Bears because he loved being alone. Brian moved out of his parents’ home several years ago and though he missed them sometimes, he loved having his own cave.

Days passed, the leaves were still green and a warm breeze whistled through the trees. Brian Bear strolled through the forest, picking raspberries that shined like rubies off the nearby shrubs.  Brian carried a little basket that he made out of twigs and filled it with delicious berries that he could bring home. After picking some juicy blueberries, there was a sudden strong breeze. The warm gust startled Brian so much that he accidentally dropped the basket of mixed berries. Muttering to himself, Brian bent down to pick up the scattered berries and put them back into his basket.

Then, he heard a fluttering sound in the trees above him.  Brian looked up and his eyes widened with amazement. Something yellow and red mysteriously landed on the tree branch. Brian, curious as to what the object was, began climbing the tree to get a closer look. It appeared to be cloth, something that the humans called: a cape. But it was not an ordinary cape—it was a SUPERHERO’S CAPE! It was golden yellow with a beautiful red border lining it.  In the middle of the cape were the two red letters: MN.  The cape dangled at the end of a long tree branch.  Unfortunately, the old tree limb was too thin and fickle to support the heavy bear. Brian reached out for the cape but was unable to grasp it. Slowly edging out onto the branch, Brian snatched the cape and pulled it closer to him. Suddenly, an odd feeling rushed over Brian when he looked at the cape.  In a stroke of destiny—Brian felt more powerful.

What the…? Brian started to say.

Just then, there was a sudden cracking sound and the branch Brian stood on snapped in half!  In a flash, Brian plummeted to the ground and landed with a loud THUD!!  But thankfully, Brian wasn’t hurt. Gawping around, Brian was temporarily stunned and surprised.  Staggering, he got up and brushed himself off but quickly realized that his paws were wet with red and blue juice! Brian looked down and noticed that he had fallen right on top of the berries he was picking!  Brian the Bear was covered in blueberries and raspberries!

Well, isn’t that great! Brian exclaimed. With a deep breath, he shook his thick brown fur, cleansing himself of the messy berry juice.  With his massive bear paws Brian combed his chocolate brown fur.  There.  All clean now! he thought blissfully.  With his new prize in hand (having forgotten about the pile of smashed berries) Brian, with a subtle skip in his step, set off for his cave.

Late that night, Brian sat restlessly in his bed. He was unable to sleep since it was pouring outside.   A loud rumbling of thunder and a flicker of lightning kept Brian from falling asleep.  He rolled onto his side, away from the mysterious cape that lay across a nearby table. Brian laid there with his eyes open, staring faintly at the wall.  Brian Bear started fidgeting; he could not stop thinking about the mysterious cape!  With a glaring bolt of lightning, he saw his own shadow with a great flowing cape fluttering behind him.  In that second, Brian looked grand and heroic.

I wonder what that piece of cloth is for, he thought. I wonder what it does...

Suddenly, Brian knew what he wanted to do—what he HAD to do. With a firm resolution, Brian leapt out of bed and wrapped the colorful cape around him.  Instantly, Brian felt stronger, faster, smarter and braver. He marched to the mouth of his cave and watched the storm sweep through the Great Woods Forest.  That moment, Brian knew that he had a responsibility to the animals in the forest with his newfound powers. He would right wrongs, protect the innocent and uphold peace in the kingdom of the forest.  Brian Bear decided that from then on, he would wear the cape and become the protector of the forest.  From then on, he was the remarkable, MAJOR NATURE!!

That night, not only was a hero born but a dastardly villain as well. Roxy the Raccoon was a seemingly normal raccoon. He was intelligent, fun loving and loved pulling pranks. Roxy also was very lazy and hated doing work. Winter fast approached the Great Woods Forest and Roxy did not store any food! Throughout the spring and summer, Roxy lounged around, played all day and did not save a crumb for the coming winter. Shivering in his home while the storm drenched the forest, Roxy’s stomach growled. He was very hungry.  So hungry, he started worrying about how he would ever survive the winter!  So Roxy decided that he was going to have to get some food. The very thought of gathering his own food was not to Roxy’s liking. Besides, a lot of the food had already been gathered and stored by the other animals in the forest. Roxy remembered snorting at the squirrels as they gathered acorns earlier that day. Suddenly, Roxy smiled and sniggered to himself as a brilliant, yet awful idea churned in his head. He would deceptively trick the other animals and steal their food for himself!

The main city in the forest, Ginia City, housed the towering capitol building. The city was divided into six different animal neighborhoods, all circling the center hub. The six sections were the Rabbit Lands, the Squirrel Kingdom, the Possum Village, Porcupine Town, the Chipmunk Village, and Feral City, which was home to the cats that dwelled there. All of the animals lived in their specific sections but got along just fine. They worked, shopped and ate in the center hub, known as the Capitol Area.

At the very center of the Capitol Area was the great City Hall building.  Inside it lived Mayor Red Fox, the mayor of Ginia City. Wearing his favorite grey suit, he stood majestically in his office with his hands folded as he watched the storm sweep through the forest. The mayor’s office was decorated very fancily, with dark red carpets adorning the floors and dark wood lining the walls. There was a magnificent oak desk, very uniquely decorated, with an imposing chair behind it and two small, comfy chairs in front of it. Behind the desk was a large window, Mayor Fox gazed distantly out at the squall. Paintings of past mayors garnished the walls for guidance and inspiration. Many animals were represented among the paintings, including rabbits, a porcupine, a snake, even a brown bear! Mayor Fox turned and looked at the paintings, fixing his gaze on the bear specifically. In a flash, he could have sworn that the painting looked menacing. Or perhaps, it was the memory of that mayor’s foul deeds. Mayor Fox shrugged and slowly stared out his window. He stood for several moments, calmly listening and waiting—until there was a knock at the door.

Come in, Mayor Fox said, his eyes still fixed on the brewing storm. The door opened behind him
