PREFACE
This book has been written specially for anyone whose life is full...crammed, in fact, with many things to do, many problems to meet, and little time for leisurely contemplation. It is written for him who must read while he runs.
Having been just such a person for nearly half a century, I know from personal experience that some of life’s most fruitful moments are not in the frenzied outer world but in the calm inner world. The inner moments have provided me with whatever talents I possess for coping with difficult situations and developing any inspirational qualities I have acquired as a lecturer and writer.
It was Goethe who suggested that character is built in crowds but talents grow in solitude. This is particularly true of the talent for meeting life’s problems, for maintaining poise in the face of trials and afflictions, for gaining cherished goals, or just for meeting life’s everyday tensions. We seldom have time for the strengthening solitude, however; hence, this book. It is to help you organize and make the most productive use of any quiet moments available.
