I came here for a pleasant, if solitary, stroll in the woods – I came to be encouraged and to be lifted up – I came to be set free and to have the scales taken from my heart... to be sent on my way with a slap on the back and a wise fatherly blessing...

Down by the Riverside
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava,
that we might humble ourselves before our God,
to seek from Him the right way
for us and our little ones and all our possessions.
Ezra 8:21
I’m tired and I’m thirsty from my journey – I’m kneeling by the water’s edge and I’m drinking from the cup of another’s hands – the land of my servitude left behind, way back over on the other side of the sea.
The journey that beckons has been calling to me for all my life – it reaches far out into the unknown distances of my heart – the thought of it excites me and unsettles me in equal measure, but for now, I will simply take my rest here – by the peaceful murmuring of this cool clear water.
My spirit is happy here, but my flesh is aching and restless – it hungers and it craves and it demands without respite the immediate restoration of all its familiar comforts and attentions – its surfeits of plenitude.
The days pass as I try to reconcile the two – but in truth I know, the discord between them is not set for any early release – and certainly not on the grounds of good behaviour…
… and so – I close my eyes and I dream a waking dream – of all the days, the winds and the waves that have carried me here to this shore…
… I trace each step of my journey like a pattern in the sand… my escape – my midnight flight… the ocean of His love reaching out before me…
… carrying my heart like a jewel, across the reaches of the deep – the dangers and the fears of the coastal currents, giving way to the rocking of the wide ocean swells…
… a place of no boundaries – of horizons only imagined – a place of no looking back… no points of reference, save for the stars above, as they ring out their psalms from sky to sky…
… faith my only compass – my only chart… love my only beacon – my only guiding light… all is limitless and gentle – all is revealing and kind…
… and I, but a lone sailor here, in the middle of it all – just the beating of my heart for companionship – and my trust in the hands that hold me.
Here beside the waters of Ahava – here amongst its rolling dunes – this has been my time of waiting – my time of preparation for the continuing of my journey – a time for the trials of the flesh and the forging of the mettle of the mind – to deny and starve the roaring lion – to pull away
