Introduction
I’m sitting in a local cafe on the strip
of our college town, looking much older than your typical college student. It’s mid-afternoon and my gel pen is running out of ink. But, I’m stubborn and determined to use every last drop of ink the cartridge will allow. Eventually, I’ll have to reach into my backpack and pull out another pen. There are many available, in a variety of colors. That’s typical for me.
I even have a Japanese-made mechanical pencil that never has a dull edge. Blues, reds, black, and pencil — they are all there. Waiting for their turn to be used. Giving up their ink at the end of a fine tip needle. Pouring onto the pages of this notebook in all CAPS.
Why am I here? My youngest, our youngest is one block away in Children’s Hospital, waiting on test results. Because of COVID-19, only one parent is allowed to accompany each child. So, her sweet mother, her birth mother is there to watch, pray, and quiet her fears. Letting our child know that no matter the outcome, all will be okay. Hopefully, it's just a tummy ache and nothing more.
And I sit here and write, pray, and watch my phone for any new messages or updates from my wife. All the while, writing in an old bullet journal that had been discarded by said child. She used it to start keeping track of her school assignments and write words of encouragement to herself. In the back, there’s a slot for notes. I found four index cards dated August 2018. Each with its special saying that our daughter had written in colorful script.
Find Comfort in the Chaos
Create Your Own Sunshine
No Rain No Flowers.
It Will Be Okay
Ironically, our daughter had written these words over two years ago to herself. But today, they are bringing comfort to me. Now, before you go thinking that I had stolen
her bullet journal, I didn't. It was in a pile of trash going out for disposal. She had only written on the first 42 pages, leaving the remainder blank for me.
I was going to cut out the pages she had written on but quickly changed my mind. Not because our baby girl had written something profound, prolific, or noteworthy. No, not that.
