The Decluttering Your Life Workbook - Alex Wong

    Introduction

If you're reading this, then you’re probably like I was once. There are probably things in your life that you wish to make more organized. There are things in your life you wish you could improve, but you just feel so overwhelmed that you don't know where to start. I was like you, once.

My problems were rooted in early anxieties. My father was a compulsive hoarder and had a very strict view on how to run the household. My mother was equally strict, and clearly had a lot of anxiety in her day-to-day life. It often seemed as if everybody around me was constantly worried about every little thing.

When I moved to Hong Kong for grad school, I realized how much extra stuff in my life I was able to simply throw away. I had so many clothes that I had only worn once or twice which I now had to throw away. I tried to sell some of it on sites like Craigslist, but in the end, I had to throw away a lot of my belongings.

That was when I realized I had wasted a lot of my money on things that I had barely ever used. Nowadays, I live more like a digital nomad. I travel very lightly and have been living this lifestyle for a number of years now. Suffice it to say, I have learned quite a bit about living in a de-cluttered manner.

Many of the places I have stayed over the years have been quite small. The first apartment I had in Hong Kong, I could touch the walls on either side by stretching out my arms. While it is hardly necessary to take your life down to this point, living like that definitely taught me a lot about living frugally and without clutter in my life.

    Who am I

I am a young professional who has lived in many different places throughout the world. I have created several successful businesses with the knowledge that I have gained in my travels, and I have also published multiple successful books, including the bestselling, The Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

I've worked with many businesses, some of which were 6-figure businesses. Throughout my life, I have lived and worked in more than a dozen countries. What I have learned over the years is that clutter and anxiety are two of the worst things that can affect our day-to-day life. Almost all of my success is due to having de-cluttered my life, and overcome my anxiety.

Once you learn to properly organize the different areas of your life, like I have, you will see for yourself how much easier it is to achieve your goals and move forward with your life. Having a cluttered life, both physically and mentally, is one of the biggest drags on a productive lifestyle.

    Who is this book for?

This book is for you if you, like me, feel like your life could be more organized and functional. If you feel like your personal life is cluttered and unorganized, and you want to make it better, then you're on the right track by reading this book. Here I've put together a simple set of guidelines that will give you the perspective and tools you require to identify problem areas in your life and address them properly.

The goal of this book is to introduce techniques of de-cluttering and organization to people who need them the most. After getting a handle on the principles I describe here, you should be much better equipped to move forward with identifying and eliminating problem areas of your life.

    Where do we start?

Clutter in our personal lives can be a lot more complex and multifaceted than people realize. Not only does clutter affect our lives physically, but it can have a profound effect on our mental and interpersonal lives, as well. Building better habits and de-cluttering our lives begins with identifying these problems.

We will be breaking down the areas of an average productive life, and examining how clutter and anxiety can have an effect on all of them. We will also go over how to take control of these aspects of our lives in order to reap the benefits of a functional lifestyle. Although allowing clutter and anxiety to rule your life creates distinct roadblocks to success, properly de-cluttering your life can make things a lot easier for you, and give you distinct advantages.

So let's get started. What are the different areas of our lives that we need to address?

    The Mind

The first area we should deal with is the mind. If you have a cluttered mind filled with negativity and random thoughts, it can be impossible to make any progress in your day-to-day life. Even worse, if you have a cluttered mind with negative thoughts, it can often become harder and harder over time to do things properly and responsibly, while it becomes easier to cut corners and take the easy way out.

The mind can become cluttered in a variety of different ways, so it can be difficult to identify the problem areas that are dragging us down. In this chapter, you will learn to cultivate a mental state that allows you to identify and deal with negative thoughts.

You will also learn how important it is to meditate and cultivate a healthy relationship between your mind and your body. Your physical health plays a huge role in your mental health, and vice-versa, so it's important to understand the relationship between both of them before moving forward.

Finally, you will learn the importance of seeking professional help when you need it, as well as some resources to help you tackle the problem of getting your mind in order.

    Time

Time is one of the most important resources at our disposal. Everything we can ever hope to accomplish is limited by time. Getting a handle on time management can be difficult, but it is an essential step to leading a productive lifestyle.

Many people tell themselves and others that they don't have time in the day to do things like exercise or meditate. However, many people will be surprised to learn just how much time they actually waste in a day on useless or unhealthy activities. Identifying and rehabilitating our time management is the key to de-cluttering our lives in general.

In this chapter, you will learn how to be mindful of your time, and how to identify areas where you can be more productive. You will also learn the importance of goal setting, and how time-oriented goals are the best way to get your life on track.

    Health and Body

As stated above, the physical body and the mind play a huge role in each other's proper functionality. Once we've tackled all of the mental clutter that has been affecting our life, we will be in a good spot to begin working on the physical aspects of de-cluttering.

Ideally, we want to work towards having a regular exercise routine that helps us live healthily and gives us a sense of accomplishment and routine. However, for many people, it is necessary to start slow and take baby steps when we begin physical exercising.

In this chapter, you will learn some basic principles of getting your physical health de-cluttered and back on track. We will also stress the importance of getting a physical check-up, and understanding medical history in your family background.

    Eating and Diet

You are what you eat. Besides actively adopting an exercise routine and understanding the importance of physical activity, the principles of healthy eating are also incredibly important to being healthy and leading a successful life.

Your diet has deep and unexpected effects on your life, including how much money you spend, and how motivated you are in day-to-day tasks. If you have any mild addictions, such as caffeine, these habits can affect the entire way you engage with your diet.

In this chapter, we will learn how to save time and money while eating better. We will also learn about things like intermittent fasting, and how they can positively affect our outlook. The basis of this chapter will center around the building of meal plans, and how to properly manage an effective grocery list. You will also learn about apps that you can use to help you manage your food consumption over time.

    Relationships

Humans are social creatures. Our entire lives tend to revolve around, or be deeply affected by, our relationships. In order to lead healthy and de-cluttered lives, we have to take control of our relationships and make sure that we are being influenced by people who matter to us. Nurturing healthy relationships with a few people is better than trying to be friends with everybody

In this chapter, we will go over how to make time for family and friends without it having a negative effect on our lives. We will also review techniques to practice being more open-minded and patient. Although nobody can easily develop patience overnight, there are distinct steps you can take to put yourself on the right track.

You will also learn how to identify when a relationship has become toxic for you, and how to cut toxic influences out of your life without hurting anybody. It is important to find relationships with people who can elevate you and support you when you need it. It is also important to foster relationships with potential mentors and coaches.

    Home Organization

This is the classical example of de-cluttering your life. Your home is in many ways a reflection of your inner self. Growing up with a father who was a compulsive hoarder definitely taught me a lot of things about clutter. Since moving to Hong Kong from Korea for grad school, I have adopted a minimalist lifestyle, and haven't looked back.

Seeing just how much stuff I didn't need in my day-to day-life made me see how much space and time I really had, and how keeping it organized and under control would help me feel comfortable and live responsibly.

In this chapter, you will learn about different methods of keeping a de-cluttered and minimalist household. You will learn to ask yourself what brings you happiness in life, and what
