About this ebook

This is a short story...

My name is Jace MacAillelan. As a curious, typical fourteen-year-old, I devoured books on our legends: tales of The Guardians, of portals, of vicious fights between the clans of old, of Odin.

That is…until I, that inquisitive youth went looking for adventure. I dreamed of what I'd encounter on Earth, and I felt superior to my mates, for I found a portal. Me. I never told even my best friend when I first crossed. I savored the thrills, not wanting to share.

Now I wish I had heeded my father's warnings. What I'd give to be with my clan again: to hunt, fish, train, and shape-shift. I wouldn't even complain about school if I could wake in my own bed.

But I opened a gateway, revealed a portal. My family and friends paid the price. All dead, slaughtered because of me.

Here is my story…

    Prologue

When the Romans began conquering our lands, our Gods and Goddesses created Odin, because our ancestors were true believers and loyal worshipers. The Gods grace our families with special skills and powers, like shape-shifting, healing our bodies, extended lifetimes, seers to predict our futures, and librarians to record and save our histories...which include tales of travel portals between Odin and Earth. The portals are protected by The Guardians, so mortals cannot find their entrances and thus cross into our sanctuary.

The Counsel, a group of clan leaders, rule us.

My name is Jace MacAillelan. As a curious, typical fourteen-year-old, I devoured books on our legends: tales of The Guardians, of portals, of vicious fights between the clans of old. Until recently, I constantly, questioned my parents, aunts, uncles, and elders about all the wondrous things I read about.

Especially Earth. With airplanes that fly on high and massive ships that sail the seas, how does Earth hang in the air? How does Odin? How do things work or not work?

That is...until I, that inquisitive youth went looking for adventure. I dreamed of what I'd encounter on Earth, and I felt superior to my mates, for I found a portal. Me. I never told even my best friend when I first crossed. I savored the thrills, not wanting to share. My clothing was different from that of others I passed, but no one seemed to take notice. I crossed several times with no problems, discovering such wonders that were more than even my dreams could have conjured.

On one return, my father warned me of the dangers. But I laughed and slipped through again and again. I, Jace, was invincible and selfish. The excitement was addictive...until it became a nightmare.

Now I wish I had heeded my father’s warnings. What I’d give to be with my clan again: to hunt, fish, train,
