About this ebook

A Short Story by WS Greer/b>
Detective Thomas Banner hunted serial killer Cory Frost. How could he not? They went to the same high school, after all. They even lived down the road from each other until graduation. With so many similarities, how could two men be so different?
What the world doesn't know is that these two men were only similar geographically. Detective Banner was considered a saint. Cory Frost was an outcast. Everyone had high expectations for Banner, while Frost disappeared into obscurity.
Two men. Close, yet so far apart. Now that Detective Banner has captured Cory Frost, he's becoming more and more aware of just how sinister Cory has been. The more he learns about Cory’s horrifically brutal crimes, the suspense turns up as the information Cory is willing to give starts to hit closer and closer to home.
This is the day Detective Banner has been waiting for—the day he gets to record a serial killer’s confession. The only problem? It’s also the day Corey has been waiting for.

    The Confession - W.S. Greer

    Chapter One

    ~ DETECTIVE BANNER ~

    Hi, sweetie. How’s everything?

Everything is fine, my wife of the last twenty-two years says. I can tell she's in the kitchen, probably cooking up something delicious to eat. I can't wait to go home and stuff my face. I just finished helping Nicholas with his Algebra, so now I actually have time to finish dinner. Will you be able to eat with us tonight?

I exhale as I look at the mugshot on the computer screen in front of me. I see his face staring back at me and I hate it, but today I can smile when I look at it. I’ll be able to smile from now on because I finally caught the bastard. I can rest easy at night now that he's behind bars, and I can also stop slaving away behind this desk and out on those streets trying to track him down.

Yeah, I’m just finishing up some paperwork, and I think I’ll be in the clear to leave, I answer with a satisfied smile on my face. It’s so good to be able to tell the truth about this.

Oh good, my wife, Julie replies, and I can practically see her smiling through the phone. The kids will be thrilled. I feel like it’s been a long time since we’ve all eaten dinner together.

Yeah, it has been too long, I answer. Speaking of the kids, have you heard from Becky yet?

Julie exhales. No, not yet, but you know how your daughter is. Rebecca is probably out enjoying the evening in Wilmington with her college friends. It’s Wednesday, and no matter what else she has going on, she always calls. I'm expecting my phone to ring any minute now. Or, she’ll text and say she's still hanging out with her friends and she’ll call when she’s home like she did last week.

That kid is something else, I say, looking over my shoulder and locking eyes with my captain, who’s glaring at me from the doorway of his office. Captain Bennett has gotten chubby these past few years, but his face can still hold a scowl, and I can tell when something serious has just happened.

Yes, she is, Julie replies. I’ll let you know when she calls, if you're not here when she does.

Okay. Actually, if I haven't made it back by then, just tell her to call back when I get there so I can tell her the good news over FaceTime.

    Okay, sweetheart.

I watch as chubby Captain Bennett crosses the room, weaving around desks in a hurry with his eyes glued to me. Something is going on. When the captain reaches me, he doesn't hesitate.

Sorry to interrupt, Tommy, but there's been a development, Captain Bennett explains.

Whatever it is, it’s going to have to wait until tomorrow, I fire back. I have dinner plans with my family tonight, and I refuse to let anything be more important than that.

You tell him, honey, my wife says in my ear.

Captain Bennett doesn't respond right away. I watch him furrow his brow and chew his lip as if he can't bring himself to say what he's thinking.

What, Robby? I ask, trying to pull it out of him.

Captain Bennett sighs. He wants to confess.

All the air in my lungs rushes out of my body and I feel lightheaded. He can't be serious. Already?

What did Robby just say? my wife asks, sounding just as shocked as I feel.

He said he wants to confess, I answer Julie with my eyes stuck on the captain.

Oh, my god, Julie whispers in my ear.

That’s right, Captain Bennett goes on with the furrow still deep in his forehead. But he only wants to talk to you, Tommy.

    What? I exclaim.

Yeah, the captain says. Now I know why he looked so conflicted. He says he’ll confess, but only to you. He doesn't even want a lawyer, and he agreed to a video camera to document the confession. The only stipulation he has is that it has to be you, and it has to be now. Right now.

A million thoughts race through my mind. I can't believe what I just heard, and I don't know whether to be excited or terrified. This is
