    CHAPTER ONE

A LOUD NOISE began to pierce William’s ear and his eyes reluctantly opened. He began to move, his hand shuffling through his sheets and under his pillow, looking for the damned phone that was attempting to melt his brain with its sound waves. William finally found the phone and turn off the alarm, sighing with relief.

His alarm was set for 6:00 a.m. so he had time to study before the day began. But the room seemed too bright for it to be that early, and sure enough, when he checked his phone for the time, it wasn’t six.

    Seven-thirty? William exclaimed. Shit!

He rushed out of bed and began to get ready. As he brushed his teeth rigorously as if his intensity would somehow slow downtime, he realized that he didn’t have time to finish. So, when he was done with his teeth, he put on some deodorant and got dressed, thinking that taking a shower would take too much time.

Morning, Mom! William said as he stormed down the stairs.

You’re late, his mother replied. I was just about to leave you.

    I figured, he replied.

If you can't get ready in time, you might as well find your way to school, she said. I hope you're only late because you got carried away studying.

Sure, mom, He said, walking past her now. She was already dressed and ready to go, bag in hand and her keys between her fingers. She wasn’t bluffing when she said she was about to leave him. Can we go now? He said in an irritated tone.

    Excuse me?

I’m ready to go, and so are you, he said. But the only reason we're still here is that you want to lecture me on being late for the millionth time. You could easily do this while we're in the car. That way, you get to scold me, and neither of us wastes any more time in getting where we need to be.

William’s mom stared at him for a while. She considered scolding him right there but decided against it because he had a valid point and she didn't want to waste any more time. He knew his mother would never be late for anything, even if it meant losing an argument with him.

I have nothing left to say, she said, walking out the front door. I leave by a quarter to eight, ready or not.

William rolled his eyes and got in the car with her. While she drove him to school, she might’ve gone on about the matter, but
