A decade ago, I was invited to write and deliver a programme to train ex-military personnel as mentors for young people in schools. I could not have envisaged then where this vision would lead. I would like to thank all the wonderful people with whom I have had the privilege to work through this programme. Many young people have been encouraged and supported to feel grounded and to gain a strong sense of self by engaging with our ex-military mentors.
However, I have come to realise that it is equally important that parents and carers have the opportunity to understand how young people can be encouraged to learn how to self-coach – a skill for life. Hence this book, Coaching for Parents – Supporting young people to SUCCEED.
Thank you to John, my husband, for his constant support and who works with me in SUCCEED Mentoring Ltd– Believing in Young People.
Thank you to Verity Slaughter-Penney at Art by VSP for bringing her considerable artistic talent to interpret the book cover. I love working with you.
Introduction
Every year of a young person’s life is an important step on their path to becoming a valued and valuable member of society. Every step they take can help them feel happy and fulfilled.
Modern-day life can present all sorts of challenges that young people have to cope with whilst they also try to get a relevant education. Surveys in 2018 have indicated that:
85% of all jobs that today’s students will be doing in 2030s do not exist yet! (Dell)
Of 350 careers, 160 are in decline. (Deloitte)
1/3rd of jobs at high risk
of automation by early 2030s. (Price Waterhouse Cooper)
So what can be done to help young people to achieve despite the challenges that they may face? Coaching has for a long time been seen as a way of helping people to fulfil their potential. However, how does coaching fit with the natural role of mentor as a parent?
Historically the word mentor
originates from Greek mythology. Homer’s Odyssey relates the story of King Odysseus, who on leaving to go to war, entrusted his son Telemachus to the care of his friend and advisor, Mentor. Mentor’s job was not merely to raise Telemachus, but also to prepare him for the responsibilities he was to assume in his lifetime. The passing on of tradition, family values etc. is, therefore, a natural part of parenting.
The world is changing at an ever-increasing rate. One thing is certain that young people will need to be:
Optimistic
Adaptable
Resilient
Which means that they need to:
Work it out
for themselves:
Be prepared to fail!
Take risks.
Have another go!
