    Chapter One

    He needs you.

Briganita Forest rolled over with a groan. The voice in her mind brought her half awake. As it normally did. She refused to open her eyes. It was too early to get up for the day.

He needs you. Only you can free him.

She stiffened as along with the woman’s voice images flashed through her brain, too quickly for her to concentrate on any one. It was a fast blur of a coastline with green, green grass and high cliffs. The last picture was of a man dressed like a warrior of old, complete with a sword hanging at his side. Briganita didn’t get to see a clear image of his face. She was just able to notice his longish blond hair and piercing blue eyes.

You must fulfill your destiny. You are the strongest out of all my descendants. It is time to awaken your powers and do what I foresaw almost fifteen hundred years ago.

An intense pain settled in Briganita’s brain, then seemed to radiate to the rest of her body. Her nerve endings felt as if they were on fire. She came to instant wakefulness and sat up in bed as she clutched her head and gritted her teeth. The sensation lasted all of half a minute, but it was enough to make her pant and wonder if there was something seriously wrong.

The seconds ticked by and the pain didn’t return. Briganita cracked open her eyes and took quick mental stock of herself. Everything appeared to be working as they were supposed to. Her heart beat at a regular rhythm, and she was able to move her arms and legs. Her vision wasn’t blurred. She could clearly see the cramped confines of her small bedroom inside her apartment.

Briganita shook her head. Had it been just part of her dream? Hearing the woman’s voice inside her mind while she slept wasn’t anything new. It’d started about four months ago, about once a week, but as time progressed, the instances increased, and the voice become more insistent and clearer. Harder to ignore.

She threw back her covers and then slid her legs over the side of the bed. There was no point trying to go back to sleep. The voice would only return if she tried. It always did. Maybe she should see a shrink about it. She shook her head again. No, she wouldn’t do that. For one thing, she couldn’t afford it, and for another, she’d be admitting she was losing her mind. She was not going crazy.

With a sigh, Briganita stood and walked to the only window in the room. She pulled the curtains open and stared at the Toronto skyline that stretched before her. The stars were slowly winking out as the dawn sun rose. She blew out a breath. She’d lost count of the number of sunrises she’d seen since the voice had invaded her dreams.

There was nothing for it but to make breakfast. Briganita walked out of her bedroom, into her living room, and then to the small kitchen that was attached to it. She stifled a yawn with her hand. At the fridge, she took out eggs, cheese, and spinach to make herself an omelet. She had plenty of time since she didn’t need to be at work until nine.

Her food cooked, Briganita went to the living room and sat on the couch. The kitchen was too small even for a two-person table, so she ate all her meals where she was now. Not that she minded. She lived alone and was currently boyfriend-less. Lady Luck was not on her side when it came to relationships. Another thing she’d accepted along with her tiny living space.

After she cleaned her dishes, she dressed for work. It didn’t take long since her job didn’t require her to be dressed up. As a data entry clerk at a mid-size courier company, T-shirts and jeans along with runners were the standard attire for office staff. The only employees who had to wear uniforms were the delivery agents.

Since Briganita didn’t have a car, she took a TTC bus to and from her job. Working in downtown Toronto, it was cheaper than having to pay for parking. It took a little longer to get where she wanted to go, but affording a vehicle wasn’t an option now. She took a window seat and watched the landscape go by while she waited for her stop. She leaned against the cool glass, her eyes growing heavy. Briganita dozed off in a matter of seconds, lolled by the motion of the bus.

You must go to him, the woman’s voice from her dreams echoed in her mind. He is in Ireland. Only you can awaken him. He is your destiny.

Briganita jerked, bumping her head against the window as she came to wakefulness. That was a first. She’d never heard the voice during the day before, even if she happened to fall asleep for a few seconds, which she tended to do more often than she liked since her nights weren’t exactly restful.

She stepped off the bus at her stop and then walked the half block to her work. Briganita entered the store part of On-Time Courier Service. She headed to the back to the door that would take her to the offices. She smiled and said hello to the store clerk, Maisy, as she went by.

Before Briganita could step through to the offices, Maisy stopped her. Jimmy wanted me to tell you that he wants to talk to you as soon as you come in.

    Okay. Where is he?

He was going to the warehouse, but he said for you to go to his office, and he’d be there in a few minutes.

Thanks, Maisy, Briganita said as she walked into the office space of the company, then closed the door behind her.

She only stopped long enough at her small office to drop off her purse and jacket before she continued down the hallway to the end where Jimmy’s was located. As the owner, his was much larger than hers and had a bigger desk. Briganita took a seat in one of the chairs in front of the solid wood piece of furniture. There was a cup of steaming coffee on the desktop, which meant her boss would be back soon.

Oh, good. You’re here, Jimmy said as he stepped into the room.

Briganita smiled. Jimmy was a big man in his mid-fifties. At slightly over six foot, he towered over her five-foot-four. His dark brown hair was thinning and graying on the sides. He had a bit of a paunch, as a lot of men his age had, but the rest of him retained a fair amount of muscle. The one
