About this ebook

Brody is trying to make his way home for Christmas, but he’s leaving his heart behind.

It’s been months since he and Cole broke up, but he’s a hard man to get over. The break was inexplicable. They were solid. In love. But Cole had always been hot and cold. He’d be sweet then distant.

Never sure if it was his nature as a bear shifter or his nature as an alpha, Brody took it hard when Cole abruptly cut off their relationship.

But in this small town, it’s impossible not to run into him again, and Brody finds himself stranded on a cold, blizzardy Christmas Eve with the man who broke his heart.

Will the two work out why Cole thought his shifting ways would tear them apart? And will Brody run from his heat or embrace it?

    Bear Season - Kaleidoscope Press

    CHAPTER ONE

    COLE

It was times like these when I truly wondered why I'd taken a teaching job cross country and away from everyone I loved. It wasn't like I couldn't get a job back in Chicago, but I had just graduated with my teaching degree, and when I saw the ad for the position here, I was struck with a sense of adventure. I'd decided to apply. Of course, I had gotten the job instantly, and within a week of graduating, I'd found myself in the small town of Springer Grove. The place had its charms, don't get me wrong — the lakeside destination was beautiful and perfect for outdoor activities that served a nature lover like myself well.

But the winter here is harsh, and that's why I was sitting in the airport. My flight had been delayed for just over five hours, and I was beginning to feel beyond irked about it. It was Christmas Eve, and the thought of being snowed in and alone on Christmas itself was not something I even wanted to think about.

Perhaps I normally wouldn't have cared so much — I always thought of Christmas as just some big commercial holiday, and I wasn't one bit religious. But I'd learned in the last year working away just how much a holiday like Christmas meant. It was one of the only times during the year that I'd actually get to see my family, as annoying as they were. We'd sit down around the fire and drink eggnog and eat turkey till my stomach burst, watching Christmas specials on television till I eventually fell asleep in the bedroom I'd grown up in.

This year, I was desperate to get home because the truth was, ever since Brody and I had split up, I'd realized just how much I hated being alone.

I had met Brody almost a year ago at a New Year’s Eve party of a co-worker of mine, Janet. It was love at first sight, for me anyway. As he sauntered across the room, his dress shirt sleeves rolled up and showing off his delicious forearms with a beer in hand, I'd decided he was the one.

I closed my eyes for a moment and reminisced on our first meeting. He was tall, even with my five feet ten he towered over me, his body broad and muscular and his cropped hair the color of bitter dark chocolate. He had these gorgeous hazel eyes
